patrol announced

The North Central Regional Sobriety Checkpoint DUI Taskforce announced that Sobriety Checkpoints and Roving DUI Patrols will be conducted today through Monday on Routes 61, 183, 901, 209, 1006, 309, 1008, 443, 895, 125,25, 924 and 54.

Travelers are reminded to call 911 if they suspect a drunk driver or to call, toll-free, 888-UNDER21 to report underage drinking.

Police probe

Internet theft

PINE GROVE - State police at Schuylkill Haven are investigating a theft by deception incident that occurred to a woman at 171 Mexico Road, Pine Grove Township, about 8:30 p.m. June 10.

Police said Linda Lapp, 45, reported she was scammed out of about $965 through an online purchase.

The woman said her daughter tried to purchase a puppy through an out-of-state seller and sent money to the seller via Western Union.

It was eventually determined the proposition was a scam after the seller kept on insisting on needing more money to complete the transaction.

State police take

part in effort

HARRISBURG - The Pennsylvania State Police are taking part in the "6-State Trooper Project," a multi-state enforcement effort targeting distracted driving that began Sunday and will continue through Saturday.

Police will be on the lookout for violations that may be caused by distracted driving, including speeding, unsafe lane changes and tailgating.

Motorists in Pennsylvania are reminded that it is a summary offense to use a wireless communication device to compose, send or read a text message while operating a motor vehicle.

The violation is a summary offense that is punishable with a $50 fine.

The "6-State Trooper Project" is a multi-state law enforcement partnership aimed at providing and combining resources, intelligence, and unified enforcement efforts.

It includes the Pennsylvania State Police, Michigan State Police, Kentucky State Police, Ohio State Highway Patrol, West Virginia State Police and Indiana State Police.

Man not injured

in I 81 crash

LICKDALE - A New Jersey man escaped injury when the 2013 Kia Soul he was driving crashed on Interstate 81, just west of Homestead Road in East Hanover Township, Lebanon County, at 11:27 p.m. Sunday.

State police at Jonestown said Rajeev Yelkur of Jersey City was driving north when he was unable to avoid and struck a deer that ran onto the road.

Yelkur was able to get his vehicle off of the highway and was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, troopers said.

Barnesville man

faces charges

HOMETOWN - Rush Township police investigated a crash that occurred on Bernhard Road about 4:30 a.m. Friday.

Police said Michael J. Stewart, 30, of Barnesville, crashed his vehicle and then fled the scene. Police said Stewart's mother later arrived at the scene saying she was driving the car at the time of the crash.

The investigation determined that Stewart was driving, police said, adding that the man does not have a driver's license and is facing numerous charges for leaving the scene.
