ORWIGSBURG - Motorists will drive over a new bridge going into Auburn.
The two-span concrete bulb T-beam bridge opened Nov. 26, Sean Brown, spokesman for the PennDOT District 5, Allentown, said Thursday.
The new bridge is 225 feet long and 37 feet wide. There is no weight restriction.
It replaces a structurally-deficient three-span concrete arch bridge that was built in 1924. The bridge arches had structural problems, Brown said.
Other than routine maintenance work, no major work was done to the 207-feet-long, 35-feet-wide bridge. The road leading to the old bridge is closed.
Work to replace the arch bridge started in May.
Clearwater Construction Inc., Mercer, was the general contractor on the $3,365,000 project.
The road was reduced to a single lane with flaggers between Fort Lebanon Road and Front Street. Fort Lebanon Road was closed during the construction to permit the realignment of Route 895 with the new bridge.
