The holidays are getting closer but there's still many seasonal events taking place.
Looking for that perfect holiday gift? Diakon Living and Learning After 50 invites you to join them for evenings of painting glass, glazing Christmas Ornaments, fun and camaraderie.
They open their doors Dec. 13 to all ages to glaze three ornaments. Choose from dozens of pre-made ceramic ornaments that you can glaze in any colors you like. It's a great activity for parents and grandparents to do with the kids. The event will be held at Mud and Maker in Pottsville.
If you're interested, contact Diakon at 570-624-3018. Fees apply to both occasions.
The Pottsville Lions will sponsor the showing "Disney's A Christmas Carol" at the Sovereign Majestic at 7 p.m. Saturday. There will be free popcorn.
The New Year may seem worlds away, but it's right around the corner. Do you, like me, ring in the new year with the time-honored tradition of pork and sauerkraut? Perhaps you love the food, but the aroma? Not so much. The Boy Scout Troop No. 624 of Orwigsburg will be hosting a pork and sauerkraut dinner on New Year's Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge. Patrons can eat in or take out. Call Kathleen at 570-874-4424 for details.
Speaking of 2014, that means tax season is fast approaching. Do you have basic tax preparation skills or just a desire to help others? The Schuylkill Community Action Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program offers free income tax preparation to the low-moderate income taxpayers of Schuylkill County. The assistance is provided at community and neighborhood locations, and all sites offer electronic filing, which is completed by volunteers who are IRS trained and certified.
Last year, the program served 373 clients and refunded $662,956 to residents of Schuylkill County. Our campaign slogan for the 2013 tax filing season is "Schuylkill Money in Your Pocket."
Volunteer training is a free, self-paced course and volunteers do not have to have prior tax/accounting knowledge. There are also volunteer positions available for those who want to help but don't want to file taxes. Volunteer positions available are screeners, tax assistors and site managers. Each position has different requirements, so contact SCA for details.
If you're interested in volunteering with VITA or want more information, contact Marie Fertig at 570-622-1995 or mfertig@schuylkillcommunityaction.com.
