Police investigate

shooting incident

ORWIGSBURG - Orwigsburg police said arrests are expected after an incident about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 400 block of Cherry Street.

Sgt. John Koury said officers were called to the area for a report of shots fired and found four men at the scene.

Officers also found a handgun with one round that had been discharged.

Koury said no one was shot and three of the men were taken into custody for questioning.

He said the fourth man was taken to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center for treatment of injuries suffered in an ensuing altercation.

Koury did not release the names of any of the men involved in the incident but said multiple arrests are expected.

4-ton salt theft

UPPER WILLIAM PENN - Someone stole about 4 tons of salt valued at about $300 from the West Mahanoy Township salt shed.

The theft took place early Thursday morning, West Mahanoy Township police said.

Those with information are asked to call township police at 570-462-2360 or 570-462-1991.

Drivers charged

in 2-vehicle crash

BARNESVILLE - Three people escaped injury after and accident Tuesday on State Road in Ryan Township.

The 2:55 p.m. accident involved a 2008 Chevrolet Impala driven by Stephanie L. Grazel, 27, of Barnesville, and a 2000 Chevrolet 3500 Utility van driven by David R. Zerby Jr., 24, of Pottsville, state police at Frackville said. A passenger, Krystal J Flickinger, 22, of Locustville, was also in the van.

Grazel was heading westbound uphill and Zerby was driving downhill eastbound when Grazel lost control on the snow-covered road, causing her to slide over the center line an into the oncoming lane, police said. The front left corner of Grazel's car then hit the left side of the van, by the driver's side door, police said

After impact, the van continued east about 45 feet and spun about 35 degrees counter clockwise and crossed the westbound lane, stopping in the westbound lane and shoulder.

Police said Zerby then exited the van and went into a verbal tirade and walked away. He later returned.

A witness that had seen the crash from her window then helped Grazel from her car.

All occupants of the vehicles were wearing seat belts, police said.

The airbags deployed in the Impala.

Both drivers were charged. Grazel was charged a violation of driving on the road. Zerby was charged of driving while his operating privilege is suspended or revoked.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene, police said.

The Ryan Township Fire Company/Fire Police assisted at the scene.

Man run over

by snowmobile

HAMBURG - A 28-year-old Hamburg man was seriously injured about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday when he fell off of his snowmobile and was run over by another snowmobile.

State police at Hamburg said the incident occurred in fields in the area of Easter Street and Centerport Road in Center Township, Berks County.

It was there police said Aaron Wetzel was riding a snowmobile in a group of six riders when he fell off of his vehicle and was by a snowmobile driven by John Byassee, Hamburg.

Police said Wetzel was taken to Reading Hospital for treatment of severe head and leg injuries and that no suspicious activity appears to have been involved.

for car crash

PINE GROVE - A 21-year-old Lebanon man escaped injury when the 1992 Oldsmobile Cutlass he was driving crashed about 4:15 p.m. Tuesday on Brookside Road, just south of Mexico Road in Pine Grove Township.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Tyler Cruz was driving north when he applied his brakes on a left curve in the road. The man lost control of the car, which went off of the road and struck a tree with its front end, police said.

The vehicle was towed from the scene and Cruz will be cited as a result of the crash, police said.

Police investigate

wallet theft

State police at Schuylkill Haven are investigating a theft that occurred about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dollar Tree at Fairlane Village mall in Norwegian Township.

Police said Carolyn Archer, 74, of Pine Grove, placed her wallet in a shopping cart outside of the store, went inside but came right back out to retrieve the wallet.

During the time Archer was inside, police said, someone took the wallet and the money that was inside.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 570-739-1330.

2 IU29 teens

to face charges

MAR LIN - A 16-year-old Lost Creek girl will be charged with assault by state police at Schuylkill Haven after an incident at the Schuylkill IU29 in Norwegian Township about 10:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Police said the girl left her classroom upset from a discipline action and while walking through a hallway pushed two different school employees.

Charges against the girl will be filed with Schuylkill County juvenile authorities, police said.

In an unrelated incident at the school, police said a 16-year-old Saint Clair girl was charged with possession of tobacco on school property.

Police said the girl was found about 11:45 a.m. with a pack of Marlboro cigarettes. She will now have to answer to the charge before Magisterial District Judge David A. Plachko, Port Carbon.

identity theft

PINE GROVE - State police at Schuylkill Haven are investigating a case of identity theft that occurred between Nov. 29 and Dec. 3.

Police said someone opened a Verizon account using the name of Bessie Keefer, 77, of Pine Grove, without the woman's permission.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.

Man to face

mischief charges

NEW PHILADELPHIA - A 41-year-old Ringtown man was charged with criminal mischief by state police at Frackville after an incident between 11 p.m. Monday and 7 a.m. Tuesday at 52 Water St., Apt. 2.

Police said James P. Druding will have to answer to the charge before Magisterial District Judge David A. Plachko, Port Carbon.

Druding, police said, caused about $200 in damage to the interior of a rental property owned by George Atiyeh, Mount Carmel.
