n New Ringgold: On-air demonstrations are on tap for members of the Schuylkill Amateur Repeater Association as they gear up to participate in the 81st Amateur Radio Field Day Saturday and Sunday at the West Penn Archery Club, 147 Archery Club Road. The field day, which is open to the public, is a 24-hour event, beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday and ending at 2 p.m. Sunday. During the event, amateur radio operators will hold demonstrations, give talks to community groups and take part in other activities to raise awareness about amateur radio. Field day is sponsored by the American Radio Relay League, the national association for amateur radio. During the annual event, thousands of fellow amateur radio operators and clubs will set up radio stations in parks, community centers and other remote locations for the purpose of gaining proficiency in operating under austere conditions should an emergency occur. "Radio operators will be making contacts with stations throughout the United States and North America," said SARA secretary Jim Munley. "We also have a 'Get On The Air' station, called GOTA, so that anyone from the public can participate by talking on a ham radio." n Ringtown: The Ringtown Area Library announced new operating hours, effective immediately. The library is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, noon to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays. The library is closed Fridays and Sundays.
n Tamaqua: The Schuylkill on the Move walking organization, a project of Schuylkill County's VISION, will host a hike called "Tour the First Trout Hatchery in the United States," from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Participants will meet in the parking lot of Owl Creek Reservoir on Owl Creek Road just south of Tamaqua and carpool to the nearby site. In a press release, Patrick M. "Porcupine Pat" McKinney, education coordinator for the Schuylkill Conservation District, said participants will walk to see the Owl Creek Trout Hatchery workings from the 1870s. The site is private property, he said, and the organization has special permission to access the property. The three-mile hike is rated moderate. n Tamaqua: The Disabled American Veterans group is offering free veterans claim service to all veterans, widows of veterans and their dependent children, according to Bruce J.
