A Minersville man will serve time under special supervision after being sentenced Monday in Schuylkill County Court on a driving under the influence charge stemming from an August 2012 incident.

James L. O'Brien, 49, must spend six months in the intermediate punishment program, Judge John E. Domalakes ruled.

Domalakes also sentenced O'Brien to pay costs, a $1,500 fine and $100 to the Substance Abuse Education Fund and to perform 10 hours community service.

O'Brien pleaded guilty on Dec. 11, 2013, to DUI, with prosecutors withdrawing two counts of accident involving damage to unattended vehicle or property and one of careless driving.

Minersville police alleged O'Brien was DUI on Aug. 20, 2012, in the borough.

In another county case, Judge Charles M. Miller on Jan. 16 sentenced Anthony D. Hassler, 26, of Pottsville, to spend six to 12 months in prison on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Miller imposed the sentence after revoking Hassler's probation, which the defendant had admitted violating.

Hassler originally pleaded guilty on Sept. 26, 2012. At that time, Miller sentenced him to spend 11 months on probation consecutive to his sentence in another case, and pay costs, a $100 SAEF payment and $50 to the Criminal Justice Enhancement Account.

Pottsville police originally charged Hassler with possessing drug paraphernalia on April 6, 2012, in the city.

Also in the county court, prosecutors have withdrawn charges against a Pine Grove man.

Shane M. Cillo, 35, had been charged with simple assault and recklessly endangering another person. Schuylkill Haven borough police alleged he committed those crimes on March 1, 2012, in the borough.

President Judge William E. Baldwin signed an order allowing prosecutors to withdraw the charges and directing the defendant to pay the costs of the case.
