With predictions of accumulations from 2 to 4 inches and temperatures dropping, the county received enough snow to close schools early Tuesday and delay many Wednesday morning.

David Martin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in State College, said Wednesday that Schuylkill County saw anywhere from 1 to 3 inches total Tuesday.

According to newspaper archives, the NWS issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Schuylkill County from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Martin said that accumulation totals included 2.8 inches in Mahanoy City, 2.5 inches "just west of Orwigsburg," 2.2 inches in Pottsville, 2 inches in Ashland, 2 inches in Tamaqua and 1.3 inches in Ringtown.

"There is nothing major in the coming days, just some fronts going through every so often," Martin said.

He said that today there is a 40 percent chance of snow showers in the afternoon and it will continue to be cold with highs about 15 degrees, then tonight it will be mostly cloudy with a low about 5 degrees.

There is a 50 percent chance of snow showers on Saturday with temperatures in the upper 20s, a 40 percent chance of snow showers on Saturday night with lows about 10 degrees and a 40 percent chance of snow showers Sunday night with lows of 10 to 15 degrees.

All of these new accumulations could result in a dusting up to an inch.

"There's not a whole lot of anything," Martin said. "Temperatures will be well below normal for all next week, along with gusty wind at times."

According to the NWS website, on Monday and Tuesday there will be highs between 10 and 15 degrees then lows about zero at night.

The snow, which started early Tuesday, caused numerous crashes around the county.

Rush Township police investigated two crashes on Tuesday in Hometown, the first about 10:20 a.m.

Police said Zachary Oliveria, 19, of Hometown, was driving north on Lincoln Drive when he lost control, went off of the road and struck a utility pole.

Oliveria was not hurt, but his vehicle was towed from the scene, police said.

Then, about 12:50 p.m., police said Eric Bachert, 20, of Tamaqua, was driving north on Claremont Avenue when he lost control.

Bachert was taken to St. Luke's Hospital, Coaldale, by Tamaqua EMS for treatment of injuries he suffered, police said, adding that the man's vehicle was towed from the scene.

State police at Schuylkill Haven investigated a crash about 2:25 p.m. Wednesday on Schuylkill Mountain Road near Oak Road in Wayne Township that also occurred because of the snow.

Police said that Matthew A. Yulick, 24, of Minersville, driving a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am, with a 5-year-old passenger, was traveling west on Schuylkill Mountain Road, which was covered in packed snow.

Yulick steered to the right side of the roadway to allow an approaching plow truck to pass and began to slide, then traveled off the right side of the road, striking a utility pole.

He complained of back, neck and shoulder pain but refused treatment.

His 5-year-old son was properly secured in a child safety seat and was not injured.
