n Orwigsburg: Kindergarten registration dates and times have been set for Blue Mountain School District resident children who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1. At the same time, according to a district press release, registration will be held for children who did not attend kindergarten but are eligible for first grade. For first grade, children must be 6 years old on or before Sept. 1. For Blue Mountain Elementary East, registration is set for 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 26. The snow date is March 6, same times. For Blue Mountain Elementary West, registration will be 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. March 4. The snow date is March 11, same times. Kindergarten registration information packets can be picked up at the Blue Mountain Elementary offices beginning Feb. 5. n Pottsville: The Pottsville Rotary Club is sponsoring Rachel Renninger as a Greater Pottsville Winter Carnival queen candidate. Upcoming events include Yuengling Night Jan. 31 at the Humane Fire Company and the annual pageant Feb. 1 at Pottsville Area High School. The carnival will conclude with the crowning of the Queen of the Snows on Feb. 8 at Pottsville Area High School, according to the Rotary bulletin. The club has formed a committee to plan for its 100th anniversary celebration. Members interested in serving on the panel are welcome.
n Schuylkill Haven: The Schuylkill Haven Area School District will conduct its annual kindergarten screening for students who will be 5 years old by Sept. 1. Parents and guardians are asked to call the elementary center at 570-385-6731 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to register a child for the screening process, which will be held March 31 to April 4. All children need to be registered before they can be screened.
n Schuylkill Haven: The kickoff of the year-long 80th anniversary celebration of the Penn State Schuylkill campus is set for noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the lobby of the Student Community Center on campus. Everyone is invited to attend including students, faculty, staff and advisory board members. Details on all of the events scheduled during the year-long commemoration will be unveiled. n Schuylkill Haven: The Schuylkill Racquet Ball Club, 21 S. Greenview Road off Route 61, is offering the community the Insanity Workout. The club, according to a release, has a certified instructor, Shirley Antonini, who trained and learned the program in Maryland. Classes are held from 11 a.m. to noon Sundays followed by Insanity Abs from noon to 12:30 p.m. Classes are also held from 8 to 9 p.m. Thursdays. Insanity, according to the release, is a program of "max interval training in which you push yourself for 30 seconds at a time within a sequence of four exercises." n Tamaqua: Free community soup socials - outreach soup kitchens - are held from 4 to 6 p.m. the first Saturday of the month in Founders Hall at Trinity United Church of Christ, 22 Lafayette St. All are welcome. People should use the lower parking lot entrance to the hall.
n Tamaqua: The Coffee Cafe is held from 10 a.m. to noon Mondays at the Tamaqua Salvation Army center, 105 W. Broad St. Senior citizens are encouraged to relax with friends and enjoy a cup o' Joe with community peers. Participants can take part in discussions on current events, play cards or board games, build puzzles or view morning TV programs. Soup & Something luncheons are held at noon Mondays at a cost of $2 for senior citizens.
