PORT CLINTON - More than 50 firefighters battled a smoky blaze that burned through the second floor and roof of a three-story home in the borough Sunday night.
The fire occurred at 51 South St. at 5:58 p.m. Sunday, according to a supervisor at the Schuylkill County Communications Center.
"It sustained extensive damage," Councilman Paul Naftzinger, who lives down the street, said.
The home is owned by Melissa L. Kehler and David J. Heffelfinger, according to the online Schuylkill Parcel Locator.
"They live there. I heard the inside is burned out," Port Clinton Mayor Jeffery Schappell said Sunday when called for comment at 9:17 p.m.
Naftzinger said Kehler and Heffelfinger will be temporarily homeless.
"We believe it started as a chimney fire. It burned up into the walls and inside the attic. And there's smoke and water damage. And they had to knock windows out and cut holes in the top to go in. I wasn't in there, but you can tell there's extensive damage," Naftzinger said.
The cause of the fire wasn't determined Sunday night, Naftzinger said.
Port Clinton Fire Chief Harvey Henry will be conducting an investigation, Naftzinger said.
Henry could not be reached for comment Sunday night.
Responders included firefighters from Hamburg, Deer Lake-West Brunswick, Auburn and Schuylkill Haven, according to the communications supervisor.
Hamburg rolled in with its ladder truck, which gave firefighters access to the roof.
