The coronation of the Queen of the Snows will be held Saturday in Pottsville.
The celebration is the grand finale of the 47th annual Greater Pottsville Winter Carnival.
The Senior Princess pageant will begin at 7 p.m. at Pottsville Area High School's Robert W. Wachter Auditorium. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. and tickets are $6.
Amanda Boris, Winter Carnival board member, said 18 women ages 18 to 29 from Schuylkill County have been competing for the last month for a shot at the crown. The field will be narrowed to eight at Saturday's pageant before the judges get a final look at the women.
"The final judging event will be the question at the pageant," Boris said. Each of the final eight will be asked a question from Master of Ceremonies Henry Nyce, publisher of The Republican-Herald.
Boris said the women were previously judged at three events - the judges' reception, Senior Princess Fashion Show and Yuengling Night.
Entertainment during the pageant will be provided by LA Dance Theatre Inc., Saint Clair, and T.J. Fitzpatrick.
After the 2014 Queen of the Snows is crowned, the contestants will shake off the stress at the Queen's Ball. This year's ball will be held at 10 p.m. at Hillcrest Hall, Minersville.
Boris said the women are excited to relax after a month's worth of Winter Carnival events.
"The pressure is over from the judging events," said Boris, whose mother, Dee, is the coordinator for the Senior Princesses. Amanda Boris said she has been involved with the Winter Carnival since she was 5 years old but has been assisting Dee with the Senior Princesses for four years.
Along with music and dancing, Boris said the ball is special because the new queen will join her royal companions, the 2014 Snowdrop and Snowflake princesses. Those pageants were held Feb. 1, with Elise Caroline Eister, 9, of Minersville, being named Snowdrop Princess and Kara Pytko, a junior at Minersville Area High School, taking the crown of Snowflake Princess.
Completing its 47th year, Boris said the Winter Carnival is a Schuylkill County tradition that the public should support and come out to enjoy.
"It's something that has been going on in the Schuylkill County area for 47 years and it provides something to do in Schuylkill County in the (winter) months," Boris said.
