n Harrisburg: In a press release, state Rep. Neal P. Goodman, D-123, said the state has again extended the application deadline for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program to the end of the year. The regular deadline, according to Goodman, is June 30; however, the state routinely extends it until Dec. 31. The program is available to eligible Pennsylvanians 65 and older, widows and widowers 50 or older and people with disabilities 18 or older. Homeowners are limited to a $35,000 maximum annual income, while renters' income may be no more than $15,000, although applicants may exclude half of their Social Security, Supplemental Security or federal Railroad Retirement Tier 1 benefits from the income requirements, according to the release. Goodman said his staff is able to answer questions and help people apply for free. Program applications are available in his office at 39 W. Centre St., Mahanoy City. Applications are also available online through the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue at www.revenue.state.pa.us, or by calling 888-222-9190. Rebates will be distributed starting July 1. Last month, according to the release, Goodman supported a bill that would permanently extend the program's deadline, which would eliminate the need to extend it on a year-to-year-basis. House Bill 468 is being reviewed by the Senate Finance Committee.
n McAdoo: The borough will again have the Bicycle Helmet Safety Program, Councilwoman Mary Labert said during a recent borough council meeting. Under the program, borough police, if they see a child riding his/her bicycle wearing a helmet, can stop the child and give him/her a "ticket" for an ice tea or an orange drink at Boyer's Food Market. It is meant to be encouragement and a reward for youngsters who follow the helmet rule, which is aimed at safety. It also is an opportunity for children to meet and greet the police officer. The program does not put an additional expense on the borough, as Labert will cover the costs. Labert said she thinks other police departments should adopt such a program. She also thanked McAdoo police for making the program successful previously.
