n Herndon: Doughnut makers of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Urban, 1473 Urban Road, will be hard at work Feb. 17 to create more than 300 dozen raised doughnuts. Doughnuts can be ordered with or without sugar. The cost is $7 per dozen and $3.50 per half dozen. To order, contact any member of the church or call 570-758-4010. The last day to order doughnuts is Friday. Orders can be picked from 4 to 5 p.m. on Presidents' Day. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the church's cemeter sale.

n Orwigsburg: The Concert Series at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 215 N. Warren St., will present "A Valentine's Serenade" at 4 p.m. Feb. 16 at the church. Local musicians, the Rev. Barbara Kershner, Beverly Eiche Kriner and Trena Murphy, will present a program of love songs from throughout the decades, including solos and duets, four- and six-hand piano and piano solos, sacred and secular, pops to classical. Formerly known as The Three B's, the trio is now Two B's and a T. Kershner serves as pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ, Orwigsburg; Murphy is the director of music at St. John's; and Kriner is the minister of music at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The concert is free and open to the public. Free will offerings will be accepted.

n Pottsville: The American Red Cross, in a press release, issued a call for people to donate blood to replenish its supply. Officials said there is an "urgent need for platelet donors (and) blood donors with types O, A negative and B negative." A blood drive is scheduled for 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Salvation Army Center, 400 Sanderson St.

n Schuylkill Haven: Two Lego robotics teams from St. Ambrose School recently won awards and advancements at the Delaware State University qualifier tournament for FIRST Lego League. The school's White team won the top research award for the second year in a row for an original board game members developed to help kids learn about winter storm preparedness. The Red team scored well overall and was selected as one of six teams that will advance to the state level competition in New Castle, Del. on Feb. 15. At the recent tournament, 27 teams from Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and Maryland participated. The state competition will feature the top 36 teams from all the qualifying tournaments held in the Delaware region.

n Schuylkill Haven: First United Methodist Church, 420 Saylor St., will sponsor a father-daughter dance from 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 16 at the church. Tickets are $7 each and the dance will be "a wonderful opportunity for dads, grandfathers (or) uncles to treat their special young ladies to a real date," according to a church release. Light refreshments will be served and entertainment will be by Dave Evans and the DIASPORA band. To make reservations, call the church office at 570-385-3941.

n Shenandoah: In action at its January meeting, the Shenandoah Valley school board approved: drama program volunteers Bridget Rooney, Sarah Dalley and Isaac Miller; a proposal by Zelenkofske Axelrod LLC to perform single audit services for fiscal years ending June 30, 2015, 2016 and 2017; Dawn Wenrich as speech teacher at a salary of $53,281 with applicable fringe benefits; Daniel Bechtel as a substitute/guest teacher; the maternity leaves of elementary school Principal Brooke Wowak and elementary teacher Danielle Pasenchik; the resignation for retirement of business/athletic secretary Cindy Tancredi effective April 30; substitute teacher's aide Alicia Petritsch; the purchase of weight training equipment from VertiMAX at $2,730.75 from budgeted funds, and an update of the 2013-14 English Second Language Plan.
