A Lehigh County man who provided services to Tamaqua in connection with a federal grant is in trouble with federal authorities after being charged Tuesday with making false reports and statements to them.

David Unterberg, 52, of Allentown, has been charged by U.S. Attorney Peter J. Smith with making the false reports and statements to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Smith filed a criminal information alleging that between May 2010 and December 2010, Unterberg submitted invoices seeking reimbursement for expenses and wages for two conferences he claimed to have attended.

However, Unterberg never attended the conferences, according to Smith.

Furthermore, the money he falsely received was paid from HUD funds, Smith alleged.

Unterberg was the owner of Community Programs Inc. at the time he made the false reports, Smith alleged. Community Programs Inc. provided services to Tamaqua in connection with a federal Community Development Block Grant, according to Smith.

The HUD Office of Inspector General and the office of the Auditor General of Pennsylvania investigated the case, which is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John Gurganus.
