n Cressona: The Cressona Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m. March 4 at St. Mark's Church, 30 Pottsville St., which is accessible to the handicapped. Freewill offerings will be accepted. n Frackville: The Frackville Museum located in the Frackville Municipal & Community Center, 42 S. Center St., will open its 2014 season from 1 to 4 p.m. March 9. Museum volunteer Kathy Kraft said in a press release that since the museum opened, more than 500 current and former borough residents as well as class reunion attendees have toured it offering "favorable comments and generous donations." Museum volunteers are working on the new main museum room, which will be open for the site's third anniversary in September. A work session is held from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday during which volunteers record donations, dress mannequins, file news clippings and pamphlets and do light museum housekeeping. Volunteers are always needed and can join in at a work session. The museum, Kraft continued, acknowledges the 2013 donors and their names are listed on a donor board. "Many small community museums exist only on monetary donations and donations of community memorabilia," she said. The museum always accepts and appreciates Frackville items. Postcards of Frackville are available at the museum.

n Girardville: Rangers Hose Company, 6 E. Ogden St., will sponsor a Lenten dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. March 5. Platters will be $8.50. Meals will include backed haddock, macaroni and cheese or French fries, stewed tomatoes, coleslaw and dessert. Patrons may eat at the firehall or take meals out. n Mahanoy City: The student councils of Mahanoy Area and Shenandoah Valley high schools have agreed to jointly sponsor a T-shirt sale to help offset some of the medical expenses for Annmarie Carter, a teacher who during her career taught in both schools and now is facing a serious health issue. Shirts sold in Mahanoy Area will be worded with "Bears for a Cure" and the Shenandoah Valley version will be "Devils for a Cure." The shirts are $10 each for sizes small to extra large and $12 for larger sizes. They can be ordered through student council members at both schools. The sale is coordinated by student council advisers Nancy Brylewski at Mahanoy Area and Anthony Pytko at Shenandoah Valley.

n Mahanoy City: The Good American Hose Company will sponsor a seafood dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. March 5 at the firehouse, Eighth and Mahanoy streets. Tickets are $9 each and patrons will have a choice of fried fish, shrimp or deviled crab. People may eat at the firehouse or take meals out. Everyone is welcome. n Minersville: During its Feb. 24 meeting, the Minersville Area school board accepted the resignation of Lawrence R. Dixon, effective June 11. He is retiring after 17 years of service. The school board also approved March 17 as a snow makeup day.

n Minersville: The St. Matthew Travelers group of St. Matthew the Evangelist Roman Catholic Parish is sponsoring a March 3 bus trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show. The bus will depart at 8 a.m. from the Quandel Inc. parking lot and depart at 5 p.m. from Philadelphia for the return trip. The cost is $55. The group will also sponsor a June 16-20 trip to Cape Cod, Mass., with visits to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Call the aforementioned numbers for more information or to make a reservation.

n Orwigsburg: The Blue Mountain school board has changed the school schedule for the remainder of the current school year as follows: Monday will be a full attendance day for students; April 17 will be an early dismissal day for students, 12:30 p.m. for the high school and middle school and 1:05 p.m. for elementary students; April 21, 22 and 23 will be full attendance days for students. In a release, the district noted that any more closures due to inclement weather may require additional calendar modifications.

n Tamaqua: An outreach soup social called Feeding the Hungry is set for 4 to 6 p.m. March 1 at Trinity United Church of Christ, 22 Lafayette St. People are invited to share food, friendship. There is no charge. Use the local parking lot entrance to the church's Founder's Hall.
