Mahanoy Middle
Trevor Flynn and Christopher Davis were named students of the month for April by the faculty of Mahanoy Area Middle School. The program is sponsored by Mahanoy City Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 695.
Trevor, a son of Richard and Karen Flynn, Mahanoy City, is a member of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Roman Catholic Parish, Mahanoy City, where he volunteers his time with the food drive. A distinguished honor student, he is involved in the ski club, Biddy Basketball, swim team, track and field and National Junior Honor Society. He was recognized for perfect attendance in sixth, seventh and eighth grades.
Trevor plans to attend college in the future.
Christopher, a son of Joseph Uber and Jennifer Davis, Mahanoy City, is also a member of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish. An honor student, he is involved with Paw Print, spelling bee, golf team, National Junior Honor Society and Boy Scouts. He volunteers his time at Broad Mountain Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Frackville, and Mahanoy City Borough hall.
Christopher plans to attend law school in the future.
Mahanoy Area Middle School students Sarah Herring and Haley Obrzut were named students of the month for May by the school faculty.
Sarah, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Herring, Grier City, is a member of First United Methodist Church, Mahanoy City, where she is an acolyte. An honor student, her activities include Red Cross Club, Biddy Volleyball, soccer, Theatre Arts, ski club, swim team, student council, Biddy Basketball, Paw Print and National Honor Society.
Sarah is captain of the seventh- and eighth-grade cheerleading squad and, as a chorus member, was selected to sing in the District X Intermediate Song Festival. She volunteers her time at St. Paul's Bible School and the Gino Capone Wrestling Tournament.
In the future, Sarah plans are to attend college and major in psychology.
Haley, a daughter of Heather Heintzelman, Mahanoy City, and Brian Obrzut, Shenandoah, is a member of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish, where she is a member of ACTION Youth Group. An honor student, her school activities include chorus, National Junior Honor Society, ski club, Paw Print, student council, Theatre Arts, Red Cross Club and Biddy Volleyball.

Mahanoy Area
Ashley Hullihan and Cade Casserly, both 2013 Mahanoy Area High School graduates, were named students of the month for April by Mahanoy City Elks Lodge 695.
Ashley, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hullihan, Mahanoy City, was involved in Areascope, band front, basketball, cross country and softball, the latter of which she lettered in her freshman through junior years. She plans to attend Elizabethtown College and major in elementary education/special education.
Cade, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Casserly, Mahanoy City, was involved in cross country, in which he lettered as a junior, swim team and track and field, the latter of which he lettered in as a sophomore. He had also participated in basketball and golf.
In the community, Cade is an altar server at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Roman Catholic Parish, Mahanoy City, and volunteered for the chili cookoff. He plans to attend Penn State Schuylkill campus and major in criminology.
Pottsville Rotary
Cassidy Horan and Jason DiNicola, 2013 Nativity BVM High School graduates, and Brianna Ames and Nicholas Muench 2013 Pottsville Area High School graduates, were Pottsville Rotary Club's students of the month for May.
Cassidy is a daughter of Kim and Fred Horan and attends St. Ambrose Church, Schuylkill Haven. While at Nativity, she was a member of the Interact Club, volunteered for Meals on Wheels and received the Dean's Award and a Presidential scholarship.
Cassidy plans to attend Slippery Rock University and major in therapeutic recreation and pursue a doctorate in physical therapy.
Jason is a son of Dr. Arturo and Maureen DiNicola, Pottsville, and attends St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Pottsville. He was involved in soccer, basketball, baseball, Interact Club and Meals on Wheels. He was also a student ambassador.
Jason received the Brother G. Brassard Award and the highest achievement in U.S. history at Nativity. He plans to attend Assumption College, Worcester, Mass.
Brianna is a daughter of Robert and Renee Ames, Pottsville. She was member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, student council and Leo and Spanish clubs.
Brianna was varsity cheerleading captain and a soup kitchen volunteer. She participated in Relay for Life, and was a youth representative on her church council.
She plans to attend St. Joseph's University, Philadelphia, to major in biology on a pre-medicine track and hopes to become a pediatrician.
Nicholas is a son of Stephen D. and Desiree Muench, Pottsville, and attends St. Michael the Archangel Roman Catholic Church, Minersville, where he is an altar server. At Pottsville Area, he was a member of the Quiz Team, stage crew and ecology club.
In 2012, Nick received the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award, given to students who demonstrate academic excellence in science. He also participated in the Science Scholars Program at Penn State Schuylkill in the summer of his junior year.
Nick will be majoring in chemistry and physics at Lebanon Valley College, Annville.
Shen Rotary
Jordyn Kowalick, a 2013 Shenandoah Valley High School graduate, was named student of the month for May by Shenandoah Rotary Club.
Jordyn's high school activities included National Honor Society, student council, softball and cheerleading. Her out-of-school activities included student council sales, Shenandoah Midget Cheerleading organization and Relay for Life.
A daughter of Chris and Traci Kowalick, Shenandoah Heights, she will attend Bloomsburg University and major in nursing.
Frackville Rotary
Blaire Thomas, daughter of Pamela Thomas, Frackville, was honored as Frackville Rotary Club student of the month for June at a recent meeting at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant at the Schuylkill Mall.
A 2013 North Schuylkill High School graduate, Blaire was a varsity athlete for the girls' cross country and track and field teams. She was a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions and Teens Against Tobacco, served as a junior volunteer at Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street, helped distribute Thanksgiving Day meals as part of a Frackville Lions Club project, and is an active member of the youth group at First United Methodist Church, Frackville, participating in multiple church events and community service projects.
Blaire will attend Penn State University in the fall to major in biology with the goal of becoming a physician's assistant.
