SHENANDOAH - Snow days in the Shenandoah Valley School District have prompted adjustments to the school calendar, including moving the graduation ceremony of the Class of 2014.
During its Feb. 27 meeting, the school board approved the inclement weather make-up days for the remainder of the 2013-14 academic year, which moves the last day of school and commencement from June 2 to June 5.
"We have six days to make up," district Superintendent Stanley G. Rakowsky said Thursday. "For our spring break, we had built in Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday after Easter. If we needed to make up a day, Wednesday (April 23) was planned to be the first. Then we go to Tuesday (April 22) for the second day and then Holy Thursday (April 17). We are holding Good Friday and Easter Monday as days off. We're not changing that."
The three additional snow days are added to the end of the school year.
"Graduation (and last day of school) was scheduled for Monday, June 2. We added those three remaining snow days and rescheduled commencement for June 5," Rakowsky said.
The last day of school and commencement could change depending on any additional snow days.
"The scenario is that every new snow day is added to the end of the school year," Rakowsky said.
In other business, the school board acted on the following agenda items:
- Approved the 2014-15 school calendar and Act 80 days.
- Approved the first reading of the head lice policy. Rakowsky said there have not been problems with head lice, but the policy is being added since the school district did not have a policy.
"We don't have a policy that deals with head lice," Rakowsky said. "We contacted another school, and we're basically going to add their policy. It's just so we have a policy on file."
- Approved Lindsey McAndrew as a substitute teacher.
- Accepted resignation of junior high school cheerleading coach Nina Dellusso at the completion of the 2013-14 season.
- Approved a $50 advertisement in the 2014 Schuylkill County Female Scholar Athlete program.
