ORWIGSBURG - The Blue Mountain school board voted on nine policies relating to security at its Thursday meeting.
The policies in question relate to legal authority, certified agent training, handcuffs, responsibility at a crime scene, proper attire and appearance, Blue Mountain certified agents substance and drug testing, natural or sudden deaths, court notices and subpoenas and soft body armor.
Vice President Scott Reichert said he could not comment much on the policies due to security reasons.
"You know we can't discuss too much on security issues," he said Tuesday.
The district is doing what it can to make it a safer place for all who attend, he said.
School board President Heather Gosch did not return a call for comment Tuesday.
Last year, the school board decided in executive session to have staff members Jeff Faust, director of facilities, and Rick Wanamaker, assistant director of facilities, carry handguns, past school board President Mary Jo Moss said previously.
Superintendent Robert Urzillo said the policies would most likely relate to whomever is in the roles currently filled by Faust and Wanamaker.
Faust said Tuesday the district has not spent any money on soft body armor.
Wanamaker could not be reached for comment.
Both Faust and Wananmaker participated in lethal weapons training by Pennsylvania State Police certified instructors and are now state certified agents, which is required on school property, Faust said previously.
Each will carry their own guns and ammunition.
Urzillo said the district will supply soft body armor as needed.
"The district is seeking grants, and we're working with state and local agencies for acquiring body armor," Faust said Tuesday.
In other news, the board acknowledged the letter of intent to retire from Sally Toomey, an English/language arts teacher in the middle school, effective June 30.
Gary Hassenbein, a reading and math teacher at the middle school, also submitted a letter stating he wanted to retire June 30.
Urzillo said both teachers will be missed.
The board also approved a 1-percent increase in salary for business administrator Michelle Diekow. The increase amounts to $850. Diekow, hired June 2012, made $85,000 before the raise.
