Alvernia

The following local students have been awarded scholarships to attend Alvernia University this fall:

Makayla Boyle, Tamaqua, has been granted the $16,000 Presidential Scholarship to study biochemistry. He is a senior at Tamaqua Area Senior High School.

Sage Garvey, Auburn, has been granted the $16,000 Presidential Scholarship to study occupational therapy. He is a senior at Schuylkill Haven Area High School.

Molly Noon, Ashland, has been granted the $16,000 Presidential Scholarship to study occupational therapy. She is a senior at North Schuylkill High School.

Alexandria Spitler, Schuylkill Haven, has been granted the $14,000 Trustees' Scholarship to study management. She is a senior at Schuylkill Haven Area High School.

Madison Blasko, Coaldale, has been granted the $12,000 Veronica Founder's Scholarship to study nursing. She is a senior at Panther Valley High School.

Julie Bulino, Pottsville, has been granted the $12,000 Veronica Founder's Scholarship to study occupational therapy. She is a senior at Pottsville Area High School.

Jonathan Chester, Ringtown, has been granted the $12,000 Veronica Founder's Scholarship to study forensic science. He is a senior at North Schuylkill High School.

Madeline Dowd, Orwigsburg, has been granted the $12,000 Veronica Founder's Scholarship to study nursing. She is a senior at Nativity BVM High School.

Abigail Kayes, Shenandoah, has been granted the $12,000 Veronica Founder's Scholarship to study occupational therapy. She is a senior at Shenandoah Valley High School.

Abbie McCall, Pottsville, has been granted the $12,000 Veronica Founder's Scholarship to study nursing. She is a senior at Pottsville Area High School.

Nearly 150 high school merit scholarship winners attended Alvernia's annual Scholarship Luncheon on Feb. 22 with their parents.

Chestnut Hill

Allison Eberly, Orwigsburg, a chemistry major at Chestnut Hill College, Philadelphia, had the opportunity to work on research projects with faculty mentors over the past year through a grant from the Council of Independent Colleges/Foundation for Independent Higher Education UPS New Ventures Fun and the Association for Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania, with support from the Southeastern Consortium for High Education.

Twenty-one students from six SEPCHE colleges and universities were selected to work with faculty mentors on research projects this past summer and later presented their research at a poster session in the fall at Chestnut Hill.

Working with Ken Soprano, Ph.D., professor of biology at Chestnut Hill, Allison presented with a fellow student "Utilizing Bioformatics to Identify Genes Whose Expression is Modulated during Differentiation of Mouse Pluripotent Stem Cells to Endodermal and Neuronal Cells," as well as with students from Neumann and Gwynedd Mercy universities.

Each students participated in 10 to 12 weeks of lab, field or library research, attend colloquia and prepare interim and final reports along with their poster materials. Faculty and students collectively contributed more than 3,000 hours to their projects, with an average 125 hours spent in re-search by the students.

The students will present their work at the SEPCHE Honors Conference this month.

Dallas

Paul Luke Domalakes, Frackville, was named to the Academic Honor Roll by the University of Dallas, Irving, Texas, for his outstanding academic achievements during the fall semester.

A junior art history major with a minor in business, Paul Luke attended the university's campus in Rome, Italy, during the fall semester, where his curriculum included studies in the classics, architecture, art, philosophy and literature in Rome and two 10-day intensive on-site programs at various locations throughout Italy and Greece, including, Athens, Florence, Venice and Milan. He also toured Istanbul, Paris, Belgrade, London and Manchester, England.

He is a 2011 graduate of Nativity BVM High School and a member of Knights of Lithuania Anthracite Council 144. He is a son of Paul and Patti Domalakes, and a grandson of Helen Kiefer, all of Frackville.

Kutztown

Tyler D. Rolshausen, Schuylkill Haven, was inducted into the Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Delta Sociology Honor Society at Kutztown University. Students must have an overall GPA of 3.3 and a 3.0 in sociology to qualify for membership.
