TAMAQUA - A New Philadelphia man charged with dragging a Tamaqua police officer with his vehicle on Dec. 26 appeared for a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Stephen J. Bayer.
Zachary L. Kabana, 20, of 60 Valley St., was arrested by Tamaqua police Patrolman Joseph Krebs and charged with one count each of aggravated assault, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.
Prosecutors withdrew the aggravated assault charge and Kabana waived the remaining to offenses to Schuylkill County Court.
Krebs charged officers were looking for a vehicle and found one matching the description about 2:30 a.m. in the 400 block of Anthracite Avenue. Krebs said he got out of his vehicle to speak to the driver, later identified as Kabana, and when the man appeared to want to drive off he opened the door and grabbed a hold of him.
At that point, Krebs said Kabana slammed his foot on the gas and pulled away, dragging him for about 15 to 20 yards before he could not hold on any longer.
