Shen Rotary

Lidia German, a senior at Shenandoah Valley High School, was named student of the month for January by the Shenandoah Rotary Club.

An honor student, Lidia is student council president and Class of 2014 secretary. She was named the 2012-13 Shenandoah Valley spring queen. Other school activities include National Honor Society, Learn and Serve Committee, Schuylkill Youth Summit Committee, Shenandoah Valley Anti-Bullying Task Force, talent search, Relay for Life, ecology club, drama club and softball team.

Her community service includes Toys for Tots, SPCA, Hurricane Sandy and Class of 2014 fundraisers, volunteering for Feed a Friend, Lymphoma and Leukemia Society, Shenandoah Valley ethnic fair and the SV Elementary Christmas show and membership on the Bullying Prevention Task Force and Schuylkill Leadership Conference. Lidia is an English as a Second Language tutor for elementary students and also volunteers her time during the summer for ESL students who need assistance.

Lidia is a coordinator of the March Against Racism and she also coordinated a fundraiser for a former SV student who needs a double lung transplant and a fundraiser for Lyla's Hope. She has been involved with various community service activities as a member of student council and the National Honor Society.

A daughter of Lucia Vasquez and Humberto German, Shenandoah, Lidia plans to attend college and major in psychology.

Mahanoy Middle

Hannah Bruce and Hunter Gnall were chosen as students of the month for January by the faculty of Mahanoy Area Middle School through a program sponsored by the Mahanoy City Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 695. Nominees are judged based on multiple achievements, character, leadership, citizenship and scholastic aptitude.

Hannah is a daughter of Vladimir and Debra Bruce, Barnesville. She is a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Quakake, where she is an acolyte, greeter and a Junior Council member.

A distinguished honor student, Hannah is involved in seventh- and eighth-grade girls basketball, track and field, National Junior Honor Society, chorus, Outreach Group, Theater Arts, intramural basketball and ski club. She volunteers her time at her church hoagie and candy sale.

Her future plans are to attend college.

Hunter is a son of Gary Gnall, Barnesville, and Angel Burnham-Mitchell, Mahanoy City. He is a member of St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, Mahanoy City, where he is an altar server.

A distinguished honor student, Hunter is involved in seventh- and eighth-grade football, Teener League baseball, Theater Arts and National Junior Honor Society. He volunteers his time at Mahanoy City Relay for Life, Mahanoy Area Athletic Stand and is a server at his church's monthly breakfast.

Hunter plans to attend college in the future.

Jessica Waldron and Mi-chael Hayes were chosen as students of the month for February by the faculty of Mahanoy Area Middle School.

Jessica is a daughter of Cathy Caravella, Mahanoy Plane, and a member of Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Roman Catholic Parish, Mahanoy City. A distinguished honor student, she is involved in chorus, National Junior Honor Society, Student Outreach, ski club, Spelling Bee, Theater Arts, seventh- and eighth-grade girls basketball, Mahanoy Area girls softball, Biddy Volleyball, seventh- and eighth-grade cheerleading and intramural basketball.

She volunteers her time working at her community fire company's block party and helps clean up the community park. Her future plans are to attend college and become a physical therapist.

Michael is a son of Michael and Nicole Hayes, Barnesville, and a member of St. Richard Roman Catholic Church, Barnesville. He is National Junior Honor Society vice president and seventh- and eighth-grade football captain and is involved with seventh- and eighth-grade boys basketball, Theatre Arts, intramural basketball and track and field.

Michael achieved perfect attendance in seventh grade and is a distinguished honor student. He volunteers his time keeping score at Biddy Basketball games.

Michael plans to attend college.

Frackville Rotary

Eliza Schally, Frackville, a junior at North Schuylkill High School, was honored as Frackville Rotary Club student of the month for February at a recent breakfast meeting at Cracker Barrel restaurant.

A three-year varsity softball and cross country participant, Eliza is ranked second in her class of 146 students and scored 1,870 on the SAT. She was a member of the debate team for two years and is currently on the school's newspaper staff and is a member of the Spanish Club, Students Against Destructive Decisions and Teens Against Tobacco. She is also a volunteer at the Frackville Food Bank, Frackville Youth Sports and Frackville Fireworks Committee.

A daughter of George and Margaret Schally, Frackville, her future plans are to attend college and study bio-engineering.

Shen Elementary
