n Pine Grove: UP2US, an eighth-grade service learning club at Pine Grove Area Middle School, is working to fight the problem of hunger. The club has been awarded a $500 Sodexo Foundation Youth Grant for its "Operation Combat Hunger" project aimed at raising money for the Pine Grove Area and Tremont Area food pantries. The students developed a 20-page "Feed the Need" cookbook, which includes information about hunger, according to a press release from the Clinical Outcomes Group Inc., Pottsville. The cookbook has information on local resources that are available for families in need plus more than 30 recipes. The cookbooks are $5 each and all proceeds will be donated to the local food pantries. Club members hope to raise $1,000 to be split between the two pantries. Students will begin selling the book Friday as part of Global Youth Service Day at the middle school and from 4 to 7 p.m. at BG's Value Market, 24 Pleasant Valley Road, Pine Grove. From 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, the book will be sold at Berger's Market, 30 Lovers Lane, Pine Grove. n Valley View: Boy Scout Troop 662 will conduct a scrap metal fundraiser from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Scouts will collect along all of Route 25 in Hegins and Hubley townships, Route 125 in Hegins Township, all of Fearnot Road in Hubley Township and the back streets of both Valley View and Hegins. They will collect aluminum cans, scrap aluminum, scrap metal, car parts, appliances, copper, batteries, yellow brass, red brass, auto radiators, water heaters, washers, dryers, lawn mowers, metal yard tools, barbeque grills, bicycles and other metals. All oil and gas should be removed from the items. They will not take tin cans, electronics, TVs, computers, monitors, wheels with tires on them or plastic. Residents are asked to place their donations along the roads Saturday. If someone is missed, lives outside the collection area or has a donation, they should call 570-590-4728 or 570-847-1052. Containers provided by Zerbe Refuse will be located behind Palmer H. Reed Motor Sales service department. All proceeds will be used to help Troop 662 go to summer camp. The troop also has a trailer located at its Boy Scout camp where the public is invited to drop off aluminum cans any time.
