n Mahanoy City: Mahanoy Area School District kindergarten registrations/screenings are set for 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m. June 4, 5 and 6 by appointment only. Parents/guardians must call the elementary office at 570-0773-3443, ext. 4032, to make an appointment after May 1. Kindergarten admission is for children who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1. Children who will be entering first grade but did not attend kindergarten also must register at the aforementioned times. For first grade, children must be 6 years old on or before Sept. 1. Registration requirements for each child include a birth certificate, immunization records verified by a doctor and two forms of proof of school district residency. Registration requirements can be found online at www.mabears.net. Registration packets must be picked up at the school elementary office starting May 1. Appointments can be made then. Parents/guardians are encouraged to complete the packets before coming in for registration/screening appointments. It will be necessary for children to attend registration because they will be screened at that time for kindergarten.
n Pottsville: An over-21 Pottsville Crimson Tide Softball Dance is set for 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the Pottsville Zone. Tickets are $20 each in advance and include food, drinks and entertainment. Tickets at the door will be $25. Disc jockey TK Entertainment will provide music. n Saint Clair: The Saint Clair Lions Club will sponsor a Bling & Fling Bingo May 4 at the Lions' quarters, McCord Avenue. Doors will open at noon and bingo will start at 1 p.m. Tickets in advance are $25 per person and at the door, $30 per person. Seating will be limited to 125. Tickets include 20 games of bingo - 16 regular and 4 special. The vent will also include door prizes, special raffle prices and a 50/50. n Schuylkill Haven: The Gabriel Chamber Ensemble will close its 2013-14 concert season with a program of tango music at 3 p.m. April 27 at Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 252 Dock St. The performance will include special guest Juan Pablo Jofre, a bandoneon player from New York City. A bandoneon is a small, square concertina or accordion with buttons instead of a keyboard, used for tango music. Pianist Xun Pan also will join the ensemble for the concert. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for senior citizens and will be available at the door. Students and children will be admitted free.
n Shenandoah: The borough hall will be closed Friday in observance of Good Friday. There will be no recycling on Wednesday. Thursday's garbage will be picked up on Wednesday and Friday's garbage will be picked up on Thursday. There will be no garbage collection on Friday. Recycling will resume on the east side on April 23, according to a borough press release.
n Shenandoah: St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church, Chestnut and Oak streets, will hold an American Girl Doll bingo May 4, in the church hall. Doors will open at noon, the early bird will be at 1:15 p.m. following by regular games at 1:30 p.m. Admission is $20. All players must purchase an admission ticket. Holders of advance tickets will be entered in a drawing for an American Girl accessory. n Summit Station: The ninth annual Some Kind of Jam, a three-night music festival staged by Jibberjazz Productions at the Schuylkill County Fairgrounds, is set to go April 25-27. According to a Jibberjazz release, the event will feature more than 20 bands ranging from bluegrass to electronic funk to jazz. Tickets are available in advance online at www.jibberjazz.com. Tickets will also be available at the gate. Attendees are welcome to camp in tents on the festival grounds or bring RVs or campers. The festival site includes showers, nature trails and a creek for fishing.
