Residents and non-residents of Pennsylvania can fish for free on Thursday.

As part of the Fish for Free Days, a fishing license is not needed to fish in public waterways from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

All applicable fishing regulations still apply.

By law, those 16 and older need a fishing license, which costs $22.70. Costs vary depending on certain factors including if you're a senior citizen.

"You can fish anywhere you want to on public land," said Walt Dietz, regional outreach and education coordinator for the Northeast and Southeast regions of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

He did not have statistics for how many people take advantage of the freebie, which started in 1984.

"We hope a lot of people take advantage of it," he said Tuesday.

Fish for Free Days is held twice a year, Memorial Day and July 4.

It is a chance to remind people of how much fun they can have fishing, Dietz said.

"They still have to follow the rules and regulations," he said.

Those requirements can be found on the commission's website fishandboat.com or by calling 570-477-5717 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Bob Evanchalk, parks and recreation supervisor for Schuylkill County, said a lot of people fish at Sweet Arrow Lake County Park, Pine Grove.

He could not estimate how many people fish during free days at the park but said its more than usual.

People often come with their families, he said.

The lake has a wide variety of fish in it such as bass, trout, catfish and crappie bass.

Those not familiar with fishing might be surprised at how much fun they can have doing so.

"Lots of times people are hesitant to try it because they don't think they'll enjoy it. It think once they try it, they'll be hooked," Evanchalk said.
