With Earth Week to be celebrated around the world next week, Penn State Schuylkill will be doing its part by continuing its cleanup of the Bartram Trail in Landingville.

Tina Rose, coordinator of leadership and development and community service at Penn State Schuylkill, said the trail cleanup will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 26 and will be helping the Schuylkill River National & State Heritage Area.

"We will be pruning, raking, painting and cleaning up trash," Rose said.

While in the past the cleanups involved removing many tires, Rose said this time there won't be as many, but Lee Raring, the county's director of solid waste and recycling program coordinator, agreed to take care of any tires for the campus.

The campus adopted the trail in 2011 and is responsible for doing three cleanups a year there.

Last year, about 14 volunteers came out to clean up the Schuylkill River Trail Bartram Section in honor of Earth Day. Among the items pulled out of the area surrounding the trail were 90 tires, a refrigerator and other appliances, scrap metal and piles of plastic bottles.

"There's one area that's really bad," she said. "It's kind of in an area on the other side of the trail, where the water goes up to the shore. It's just completely trashed. It's unbelievable."

Helping students and volunteers from the campus will be local Boy Scouts, but Rose said they would appreciate anyone who would like to help.

She said that they would use some help from someone with a winch or ATV to help pull large items such as a refrigerator.

Volunteers are asked to meet at the trail head at 10:30 a.m.

Anyone interested in volunteering or donating to the effort may contact Rose at either 570-385-6253 or tmr24@psu.edu.
