n Ashland: Ashland Area Rotary Club President Connie Wydra headed discussion on several topics recently, including the club's completed annual doughnut sale, the Rotary Leadership Institute held in Williamsport, the local food pantry's need for donations and PETS - the President Elect Training Seminar - that President-elect Elaine Stone attended in Hagerstown, Md. Stone will assume her role as club president on July 1. It will be the second time she has held the club's top post.
n Hometown: Eleven students represented Marian High School's chorus at the 40th annual Allentown Diocesan Music Festival Feb. 1 at Allentown Central Catholic High School. The festival included 49 musicians from the seven high schools of the Diocese of Allentown, under the direction of Dr. Paula Zerkle. Marian senior Joseph Letcher received the Ralph Brodt Jr. Award in recognition of accomplishments in leadership, school and community involvement and service. Marian participants in addition to Letcher included Amanda Esposito, Faith Befano, Amanda Champion, Breanna Esposito, Rose Reid, Kayla Rodick, Olivia Schugardt, Emily Betterly, Olivia Sposato and James McKinley.
n McAdoo: Keystone Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 will hold a spring electronic recycling event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 3 at the fire station, West Grant and North Hancock streets. The event is open to everyone who has any of the following items to be recycled: Large appliances, $10 each; small appliances, $5 each; electronic device, $5 each (flat-screen TVs, printers, monitors, computers, keyboards and cell phones). Older style TVs cannot be accepted.
n Pine Grove: Plow Day 2014 sponsored by the Schuylkill County Ag Museum will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 3 and Fehrfields Farm, 205 Ferrebee Road. It will include plowing demonstrations, antique tractors, horses and mules. For more information, call 570 739-4422.
n Saint Clair: Val Davis, publicity chairwoman for the Saint Clair Community and Historical Society, in a press release outlined upcoming society events. At 7 p.m. May 8, Paul Steffanic will present a program titled Urban Archaeology in the society building, 24 N. Nicholas St. Attendees will learn about treasures that might be buried in the backyard. Admission is free and the public is welcome. The society will sponsor a Family Fun Night from 5 to 8 p.m. May 12 at Friendly's Restaurant near Fairlane Village mall. People may dine in or carry out and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the society. Some seats are still available, Davis said, on the bus trip to Gettysburg scheduled for June 5. n Schuylkill Haven: A studio artist at the Walk In Art Center - a nonprofit artist incubator at 110 W. Columbia St. - had one of her works juried into the 2014 Frank Scott Juried Memorial Art Show at the Googleworks Art Center, Reading. Audrey Bordonaro's mixed media piece titled "The Art of Jazz" received honorable mention. The exhibit ran March 7 through 27 and the show was juried by Dennis Danko, fine art photographer and 1997 Art of the State winner. Bordonaro, according to a Walk In release, works in a variety of mediums such as acrylic, oil, watercolor and mixed media. She studied interior design at the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, N.Y. and earned a bachelor's degree in art education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
