Volunteer Connection: Plenty to do now that warm weather is here

The weather is warm and there's plenty to do in scenic Schuylkill County.

"Disney's Alice in Wonderland Jr." will be presented at the Sovereign Majestic Theater in association with the Actors Guild of Schuylkill County May 9, 10 and 11. Call 570-628-4647 to buy tickets.

Stonehedge Gardens is hosting Mother Earth Festival, a day of art, music, workshops and celebration May 10. Demonstrations, vendors, garden tours, henna art, raffle and food will also be featured. Get your tickets early by calling 570-449-4568.

Sweet Arrow Lake will host a spring bird walk at 9 a.m. May 11. Learn to identify resident and migratory species from sight and song. You could even see a bald eagle. Participants are asked to meet in the waterfall parking lot. The walk is recommended for the beginning and experienced birdwatchers and will be canceled in rain. Call 570-345-8952 for details.

National Stamp Out Hunger Day by the National Association of Letter Carriers will be held Saturday. Why not leave a few cans of food for those in need?

Schuylkill County Youth Field Day will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Friedensburg Fish and Game. The free event may include archery, forestry, canoeing, fishing, trapping, black powder shooting and air rifle. Food and all equipment are provided. No experience is necessary and participation is optional. Pre-registration is required by calling Porcupine Pat at 570-622-4124. The event is sponsored by the Schuylkill County Sportsman's Association.

The second annual Running for Hope 5K to benefit the American Cancer Society will be held at 8:30 a.m. May 17 at the Veterans Memorial Stadium. Organized by the Relay for Life Pottsville, the run will go through Pottsville and end at the high school track. Awards will be presented to the top female and male winners plus to winners in each age group. Light refreshments and food will be served after the race that will be held rain or shine. Pre-registration is recommended by calling 570-621-8073.

The Saint Joseph Center for Special Learning will hold its 23rd annual golf tournament May 16 at Mountain Valley Golf Course. Register by May 9 by calling 570-622-4638.

There will be several blood drives this week: The Schuylkill Mall, Monday; St. Stephen's in Shenandoah, Wednesday; the Lifelong Centre Foursquare Church in Pottsville, Friday, and the Fairlane Village Mall, Saturday. Everyone who is in general good health and weighs at least 110 pounds is encouraged to donate.

Hotline volunteer

Times: As needed and available to work assigned and on-call shifts.

Responsibility: Handle incoming calls, provide crisis counseling and information/referrals, complete required paperwork, contact back-up person or shelter worker if an exceptional situation arises.

Skills: At least 40 hours of classroom and five hours of observation training, submit info for background check and child abuse documentation, be aware of and follow all SWiC policies and procedures and adhere to the confidentiality policy. Must be reliable with the ability to work independently and manage emergencies calmly and compassionately. Attend volunteer meetings.
