Pottsville police said they have received several reports of thefts from vehicles that occurred overnight Sunday into Monday.

Police said the thefts occurred between the 2000 and 2300 blocks of West End Avenue and West Norwegian Street between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m.

Police said all of the vehicles entered were unlocked at the time and among the items taken included GPS units, cellphone chargers and CDs, but most commonly loose change.

Police Chief Richard F. Wojciechowsky urges all residents to lock their vehicles at all times when unattended and to be vigilant in their neighborhood by calling police immediately upon seeing or hearing anything suspicious.

Anyone with information on the thefts is asked to call Pottsville police at 570-622-1234. Information sources will be kept anonymous at the caller's request.

Phone items, knife

reported stolen

PORT CARBON - Borough police are investigating a theft from a vehicle that occurred in an alley behind Coal Street between 5:30 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Police said Scott Hess, Port Carbon, reported that someone entered his 2010 Nissan Frontier truck and removed an iPhone, a Smith and Wesson knife and various phone chargers before fleeing.

Wallets taken

from couple's SUV

PORT CARBON - A theft that occurred between 10 p.m. Saturday and 5:45 p.m. Sunday is being investigated by borough police.

Police said Amber and John Luiken, Port Carbon, reported that their wallets were stolen from their 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer while it was parked at 117 North St.

Hit-and-run

is investigated

AUBURN - State police at Schuylkill Haven investigated a two-vehicle crash that occurred about 12:40 p.m. Friday on Route 895, Market Street, about a mile west of Summit Lane in West Brunswick Township.

Police said an unidentified driver was driving a flat black, older model Chevrolet SUV, late 1980s or early 1990s model possibly a Tahoe or Suburban, west on Route 895 and drifted over the double line.

The driver's side mirror of the SUV collided with the driver's side mirror of a passing 2005 Ford Explorer that was being driven east by Glenn R. Laninger, 26, of Tamaqua.

The impact ripped the mirrors off both vehicles and shattered the driver's side window of Laninger's SUV, police said, adding that the driver of the Chevrolet continued west without stopping as required.

Laninger suffered minor injuries while his passengers, Jessie L. Laninger, 27, and two children, were not hurt.

Police ask anyone with information on the crash to call them at 570-739-1330.

Car windshield

reported smashed

PORT CARBON - Borough police are investigating a criminal mischief incident that occurred in the 300 block of Valley Street between 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 7:50 a.m. Sunday.

Police said Joseph Powanda, Port Carbon, reported that someone smashed the windshield of his 1990 Buick Regal while it was parked unattended and fled the scene.

2 arrested

in rash of thefts

Two people were arrested by state police at Schuylkill Haven in connection with thefts that occurred between March 24 and April 24 at various store locations in Saint Clair, Pottsville and Schuylkill Haven.

Police said William J. Murphy, 45, and Michele L. Terenchin, 39, both of Pottsville, were arraigned by on-call Magisterial District Judge David A. Rossi, Tremont. Murphy was committed to Schuylkill County Prison unable to post $30,000 straight cash bail while Terenchin was released on $5,000 unsecured bail.

Police said the two used various schemes to deceive Joseph Mikolajunas, Schuylkill Haven, into loaning $10,000 in the form of $100 gift cards, cash advances, personal checks and cash.

At one point, police said Murphy used force to solicit money for Terenchin.

The two were picked up without incident by Pottsville police about 2 a.m. April 30 and subsequently arraigned by Rossi, police said.

Charges pending

in vehicle stop

McADOO - Borough police said charges are pending against a borough man after a vehicle stop April 26.

Police said they stopped a vehicle driven by Austin Rooney, 19, of 17 Snyder Ave., for an equipment violation and found two cases of Bud Light Platinum in the back seat.

Rooney was issued a citation for transporting the alcohol and will have to answer to the charges before Magisterial District Judge Stephen J. Bayer, Tamaqua.
