PASD locks down

for drug sweep

For the second time this school year, Pottsville Area School District locked down its high school and middle school Thursday to allow city state police to do a drug sweep with a dogs, Superintendent Jeffrey S. Zwiebel said.

"There were no hits," Zwiebel said.

In October 2012, Pottsville Area's Tide Task Force announced its plans to discourage drug use on school grounds with the help of canine crusaders.

Narcotics dogs have swept the school campus prior to that. In April 2010, a state police narcotics dog sniffed out a small amount of marijuana during a drug sweep at the high school, city police said previously.

The lock down began at 8:42 a.m. Thursday and lasted "under an hour," Zwiebel said.

When it started, Zwiebel alerted parents in the district using the Skyward communications system.

"No students will be exposed to the dogs and all teachers will continue to instruct inside their classrooms. As soon as the police personnel have completed this assignment the schools will return to normal operating procedures," Zwiebel said in the message to parents.
