Woman charged with assaulting police officer

FRACKVILLE - A woman was jailed Wednesday after being charged in connection with an assault earlier this month on Ashland police who were called to her home for a threat of suicide.

Sheila D. Fishburn, 49, of 1134 Brock St., Ashland, was arraigned on felony charges of aggravated assault, misdemeanor offenses of recklessly endangering another person, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest and summary charges of disorderly conduct and harassment.

Ashland police Patrolman Daniel Weikel charged Fishburn in connection with a May 1 incident at her home, where police were called for a person threatening suicide.

Weikel said he arrived at the home with Chief Mark O'Hearn and Patrolman Phillip Schlegel and Scott Bloss met them and reported Fishburn appeared to be under the influence of something and had made several comments about wanting to hurt herself.

Weikel said the officers went in and spoke with Fishburn, who appeared distraught. They told her she would be taken to the Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street for evaluation.

Weikel said Fishburn refused to go and began to leave the living room so he grabbed her by the left wrist. She pulled away and fled into the kitchen but could not leave the home because the back door was blocked.

Weikel said he and O'Hearn tried to put handcuffs on Fishburn, but she began to fight. Weikel said that he and the other two officers were trying to take the woman into custody, but she grabbed a steak knife from a cabinet.

Fishburn was then taken to the floor, disarmed, subdued with a Taser weapon and taken into custody.

After she was handcuffed, she continued to be combative until she was placed in a police cruiser and taken to the hospital for evaluation, Weikel said.

On Wednesday, Fishburn was committed to Schuylkill County Prison unable to post 10 percent of $5,000 bail set by Magisterial District Judge Christina E. Hale, Frackville.

Fishburn will now have to appear for a preliminary hearing before Hale in her Frackville courtroom.
