n Barnesville: A hike at 10 a.m. May 22 will explore the mountain behind Locust lake State Park and visit the Silver Creek Fire Tower, according to Robin Tracey, park environmental education specialist. The eight-mile hike is rated as moderate. Participants will met at the visitors' parking lot. "Bring a bag lunch and your dog for a nice relaxing hike in the woods," Tracey said in a release. All pets must be leashed and be able to get along with other pets. For more information, call Tracey at 570-467-2506. The hike will be canceled in the event of inclement weather.

n Frackville: Schuylkill on the Move, which promotes steps toward good health through walking, will sponsor "Mahanoy Plane Trek" from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. June 8. Participants will visit the site of the one-time largest steam engine in the world, led by John Domalakes. Hikers will meet Domalakes in front of the Frackville Free Public Library, North Lehigh Avenue. They will walk to the plane ruins and then down a steep but scenic slope to a tunnel. The three-mile trek is rated as challenging. SOM walks are held monthly and feature a variety of locations throughout the county and region. n Mahanoy City: Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Roman Catholic Church will hold a breakfast in the parish hall from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday. The menu will include choice of orange, apple or cranapple juice, toast or bagel, home fries, scrambled eggs, French toast, Bananas Foster pancakes, bacon, sausage links, coffee, tea or hot chocolate. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger.

n Mahanoy City: Mahanoy Area School District kindergarten registrations/screenings are set for 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 2:30 p.m. June 4, 5 and 6 by appointment only. Parents/guardians must call the elementary office at 570-0773-3443, ext. 4032, to make an appointment. Kindergarten admission is for children who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1. Children who will be entering first grade but did not attend kindergarten also must register at the aforementioned times. For first grade, children must be 6 years old on or before Sept. 1. Registration requirements for each child include a birth certificate, immunization records verified by a doctor and two forms of proof of school district residency. Registration requirements can be found online at www.mabears.net. Registration packets must be picked up at the school elementary office. Appointments will be made then. Parents/guardians are encouraged to complete the packets before coming in for registration/screening appointments. It will be necessary for children to attend registration because they will be screened at that time for kindergarten.
