Federal authorities on Friday charged a McAdoo woman with stealing more than $5,000 from the Luzerne County Adult Probation & Parole Office where she worked.

Stacey McGlone, 37, who no longer works in the office, could spend up to 10 years in prison and pay fines totaling $250,000 for the alleged thefts, which prosecutors said went on for more than five years,

U.S. Attorney Peter J. Smith charged that from January 2009 through this March, McGlone stole the money from payments she collected from people who received services from the office and/or owed fines, costs and restitution as the result of cases from Luzerne County Court, of which the office was a part.

McGlone was responsible for collecting that money but failed to make the proper disposition of more than $5,000 of it, Smith alleged.

Smith said Luzerne County and its court each receive more than $10,000 in federal funds annually, which gives the federal courts jurisdiction to hear the case.

The prosecution resulted from a joint investigation by the FBI and the Luzerne County District Attorney's Office.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Olshefski will prosecute the case.
