n Frackville: Frackville Rotarian and Past District Governor Tom Graves spoke to the Frackville Rotary Club of a recent development involving the PolioPlus Program that Rotary International initiated in 1985 the goal of eradicating polio throughout the world. In 1985, he said, there were 385,000 cases of polio worldwide. With Bill Gates and the World Health Organization supporting the Rotary program, that was reduced to 23 cases in 2012. The only countries in which polio appeared were Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria. However, with the Taliban murdering volunteers who were inoculating children against polio in rural Afghanistan and Pakistan, polio cases rose to 63 in 2013 with new cases also reported in Somalia, Cameroon, Egypt, Syria and other Mideast nations. Graves said the setback has led some people to suggest that the efforts to eradicate polio be abandoned. Rotary International has no intention of doing that, he said, citing the axiom "No child is safe until every child is safe." Graves said that even at 63 polio cases, the reduction from 385,000 is a significant advance. He said Rotary International will continue its efforts to defeat polio.
