The Minersville Business and Professional Association may dissolve the organization after more than 20 years of service due to low meeting attendance.

"When we dissolve, the community will lose a lot," Jennifer Quinn, president of MBPA, said.

MBPA organizes Spirit Day, scholarships for Minersville High School graduates, Trolley Ride with Santa and the Holiday House decorating contest.

MBPA holds monthly meetings every third Tuesday of the month. Meetings were normally held at 5 p.m. but were switched to 7:30 a.m. breakfast meetings at Myrtle May's Cafe in Minersville to attract more attendees. Though there are 82 members who pay a yearly $20 membership fee, only three or four members attend meetings. Though financial support remains strong, running the association without an adequate number of active members has become a concern of Quinn.

"The last meeting, there were two people, including myself," Quinn said.

Quinn announced that she is resigning from her position by the end of June, but no one has shown interest in joining.

"You don't have to be in business to join, you just have to want to better the community," Quinn said. "I want the organization to end on positive note, if it has to end, but I'm hoping that it doesn't end."

Planning for this year's Spirit Day on Sept. 7 has already begun. A Minersville tradition for 18 years, Spirit Day celebrates the birthdays of both Minersville and Schuylkill County and pays respect to armed forces and veterans.

"Spirit Day is a huge crowd pleaser for the Minersville community. Last Spirit Day had the best turn out ever," Quinn said. "There were over 100 vendors, crafters and exhibits. Over 1,000 people came to it."

Quinn said her favorite event MBPA has organized was either last year's Spirit Day or the 2012 Trolley Ride with Santa. During the 2012 Trolley Ride with Santa in early December, Santa drove a horse-drawn trolley on Fourth Street in Minersville for attendees. The First Congregational Church also sang carols and handed out cookies and hot chocolate.

MBPA members help plan and coordinate events as well as bring new business to the area.

Those interested in joining MBPA can attend the next meeting at 7:30 a.m. July 17 at Myrtle May's Cafe or email mbpa@gmail.com.
