SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - A Schuylkill Haven man was apprehended Monday evening after leading borough police on a foot chase following a vehicle stop.
Schuylkill Haven police Sgt. Glenn Firing said a borough officer stopped a vehicle about 7:40 p.m. after the driver pulled from a stop sign in front of him at Parkway and Union Street.
During the course of the stop, the officer learned a passenger in the vehicle - Jessie Wolfe, 30, of Blue Mountain Heights - was wanted in Berks County.
When the officer approached and asked Wolfe to exit the vehicle, Wolfe resisted, locked the passenger's side door and tried to close the side window.
Firing said Wolfe also told the driver, later identified as Stacy Roberts, Port Carbon, to "take off" but a passing motorist saw the officer struggling to control the situation and intervened by parking their truck in front Roberts' vehicle.
"This action by a courageous citizen prevented the suspect vehicle from being driven," Firing said.
At that point, Firing said Wolfe pushed Roberts out of the vehicle and then escaped out the driver's side door.
This led to a foot pursuit of Wolfe, during which several citizens assisted by pointing officers in the right direction, which eventually led to Wolfe being taken into custody about 30 minutes later on West Columbus Street.
Roberts was also taken into custody and will face charges that will be filed at a later date, Firing said.
After the chase, Wolfe was committed to Schuylkill County Prison on the outstanding Berks County warrant.
On Tuesday, Firing said Wolfe was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge James R. Ferrier, Orwigsburg, on another set of charges stemming from an incident in the borough on May 24 in which he led police on a high speed chase.
For that incident, Ferrier set Wolfe's bail at $10,000 straight cash.
Firing also said Wolfe will be arraigned at a later date on charges related to the vehicle stop and subsequent foot chase on Monday.
Assisting with Monday's foot pursuit were Orwigsburg police, Penn State police, Pottsville police, Port Carbon police, state police troopers and an enforcement officer with the Schuylkill County Domestic Relations office.
