About 600 people attended the second annual Hope Hill Lavender Farm Lavender Festival.

That's more than attended last year, Troy Jochems, who along with his wife, Wendy, owns the Pottsville farm, said.

"It smells so good over here," one woman said to those behind a table selling lavender-related items such as soap and shampoo.

"We started the lavender festival with the summer solstice as a way to bring people into the farm," Troy said.

Last year, between 150 to 200 people attended. He attributes the increase in visitors to several things, among them advertising and people passing on word of the event.

There were 16 vendors at the farm on Saturday, selling items such as pottery, crafts and books.

Music was also provided and The Brickhouse Grill, Orwigsburg, had food for sale that was big hit.

Live chickens in a pen were a big draw for people. Herring's Green Grass Farm provided the chickens and a red turkey. Leslie Kraft, a member of the farm, said the chicks were 2 days old.

"She doesn't want to leave my hand," Tristan Jackson, 8, of Pottsville, said about a chick.

Dave Moyer, a beekeeper from Schuylkill Haven, provided facts about bees to festivalgoers.

"The queen, from the time she is born, does nothing for herself," he said, adding that her sole job is to lay eggs.

Over by the lavender field, Janet Ruch, 88, of Providence Place, Pottsville, sat in a chair and admired the view.

"I have a lot of lavender at home. I'm a lavender person," she said.

Wendy Jochems took about 20 people on a tour of the lavender on the farm.

"It is a member of the mint family," she said.

Both Troy and Wendy said the winter has been harsh on the crop, but they still have lavender to sell.

"It was one of the harshest winters we ever had," Troy said.

He said they plan to have the event next year, but not on the summer solstice, so more people can come out on a weekend.

"We are going to do it the Saturday closest to the summer solstice," he said.
