Student ambassadors for the Schuylkill County Youth Summit will meet this summer to start planning next year's event and other activities.

High school and college students will meet from 9 a.m. to noon July 14 at Sweet Arrow Lake County Park in Pine Grove.

The second annual Youth Summit was held March 20 in the Schuylkill County Courthouse. The event gives students a forum to discuss how they can make the county a better place to live, work and raise families.

The effort was spearheaded by county Commissioner Gary Hess, Schuylkill County's VISION and other community organizations, legislative offices and business associations.

"The excitement level is just as high as it has ever been," Hess said Wednesday.

Hess said the students will review all of the project proposals generated by each school at the Youth Summit. That includes what the students voted as their number one priority: starting a driver's education program in their schools. They will also discuss its "Positive Schuylkill" campaign, an initiative designed to show off the county's assets.

Students will also start planning three town hall meetings throughout the county. Hess said the student-run meetings will be held from late October to early November at municipal buildings.

"We want to make it more accessible for people to come out," Hess said.

Local municipal and school officials are encouraged to attend, as well as the general public.

Hess said the students were the ones who decided to meet last summer at the courthouse and they wanted to do it again this year.

"They can also enjoy the rest of the day at the park," Hess said.

Students planning to attend the meeting at Sweet Arrow Lake can RSVP by calling the commissioners' office at 570-628-1200.
