MAHANOY PLANE - A Ringtown woman was killed Wednesday afternoon when the car she was driving collided head-on with a sport utility vehicle in Butler Township.
Mary Lou Leiby, 61, of 8 N. Bridge St., was pronounced dead at the scene by Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner Andrew Szczyglak at 12:55 p.m.
Two passengers in Leiby's car, the woman's 17-year-old grandson and a 15-year-old girl, were also injured in the crash, as was the driver of the SUV.
Butler Township police Patrolman Shawn Butler is heading the investigation into the crash that occurred about 12:35 p.m. on Powder Mill Road, State Route 4030, just west of Mahanoy Plane.
Butler said the crash occurred as Amy Boppel, 35, of Ashland, was driving an SUV west when she crossed over the center line and collided head-on with the eastbound Leiby car.
The victims were removed from Leiby's vehicle by firefighters from Mahanoy City's West End Rescue Squad.
A girl inside the Leiby car was flown to a trauma center by a Life Flight helicopter that landed at the Mahanoy Plane playground for treatment of a compound femur fracture.
Emergency personnel said the occupants of Leiby's vehicle were not wearing seat belts and the teenage boy suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Butler said Boppel was administered a blood test to see of any alcohol or chemicals she had in her system may have contributed to the crash.
Firefighters and fire police from Mahanoy Plane, Gilberton and Girardville assisted at the scene and with setting up a landing zone while the injured were treated by emergency medical personnel from Frackville EMS and Shenandoah ALS.
The crash shut down the road until about 3:30 p.m. while a state police accident reconstruction expert from Troop L, Frackville, assisted Butler Township police with the investigation.
Ashland police were also on scene to assist.
