NEW PHILADELPHIA - Schuylkill County Coroner Dr. David J. Moylan III said he wants to focus on the issues as he runs for congressman in the 17th District, and his health is not one of them.
Moylan, director of the Simon Kramer Institute of Therapeutic Oncology, New Philadelphia, hosted a press conference Thursday at the medical center to talk about his health.
"I'm 10 years older than Matt Cartwright and it is certainly a stressful position," Moylan said.
Moylan, 62, said his health may be a potential concern among voters. Moylan also has a history of hypertension and diabetes.
He underwent a physical April 14 by Dr. Denis M. Bane at the Pottsville Internists Associates Inc., Pottsville. The exam included a stress test and blood, cholesterol and kidney readings.
"I am pleased with the evaluation," Moylan said. "Dr. Bane was happy with how the diabetes was under control."
Moylan also said he plans to lose some weight.
"I am starting a new exercise regiment," he said. "I'm going to make a campaign promise. By election day, I'll be down 25 pounds to 275."
Moylan said he was inspired to step up his exercise as he has been hearing a lot of feedback from recent television appearances.
"I hear them loud and clear," Moylan said.
Moylan also brought to light an arrest from 19 years ago.
"On April 16, 1995, I made an error in judgement and was found guilty of driving under the influence," Moylan said.
As a first-time offender, Moylan completed the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program.
"I learned my lesson and have not repeated that mistake," he said.
Matt Cartwright, D-Moosic, has agreed to at least two public debates, Moylan said.
The first debate will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at WVIA in Pittson. The second was suggested for PBS in Bethlehem, Moylan said.
"I want to focus on campaign issues," Moylan said. "All you have to do is turn on the TV and you are flooded with important issues. We need to talk about it face to face."
The Simon Kramer Institute is hosting its fourth annual Cancer Survivors Celebration of Life from noon to 5 p.m. July 25. There will also be a special Mass at 11 a.m. that day in the institute chapel.
Moylan announced his candidacy for Congress at last year's Celebration of Life and promised another announcement this year.
