The average inmate population at the Schuylkill County Prison was more than 320 for the second straight month.

According to Warden Gene Berdanier, the average population at the prison for May was 322, which includes an average of 54 females. Population peaked at 335 for the month.

The average population for April was also 322. Suggested capacity at the prison is 240.

On Wednesday, the population was 329, including 61 females. Berdanier said there were 60 inmates being housed three to a cell.

In May, the board submitted plans to the state Department of Corrections to build an additional structure inside one of the prison courtyards. The board is still waiting for the DOC to determine the project feasibility before estimating costs and starting the design phase.

Last week, the board also discussed an alternative sentencing program that includes electronic monitoring and strict drug testing. The goal of the program is to be able to have about 80 to 90 participants. An early cost estimate for the program was $450,000 a year. Such a program needs approval by a board of judges.

Plans for an additional structure and an alternative sentencing program were not discussed Wednesday.

The main driveway and staff parking lot at the prison are being prepared for repair and paving. Berdanier said some areas on the hill by the driveway are sinking and must be filled in. Until then, the hill side area of the driveway is taped off and not being used for parking. Berdanier said the project will be placed out for bid.

There are currently five correctional officers on extended medical leave and another one starting next week, Berdanier said. One correctional officer is on restricted duty due to a work-related condition.

There are two staff vacancies at the prison that include a correctional officer and a lieutenant position. Berdanier said he is evaluating candidates for the lieutenant position and hopes to have a recommendation for the board at the meeting next month. The correctional officer position is vacant due to a recent resignation.
