n Lansford: The seventh annual Coal Miner's Heritage Festival will be held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday on the grounds of the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum. The event celebrates northeastern Pennsylvania's coal region history, culture, art, crafts, food and music, organizers said in a press release. It is presented by the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum. Admission and parking are free. People will be able to go on underground tours of the No. 9 Coal Mine throughout the day. It is the world's oldest deep mine, having been opened in 1855 by Lehigh Coal & Navigation Co. It closed in 1972. The event will include a huge variety of activities, food, competitions, Coal Region art, exhibits, vendors, Coal Region music, re-enactors and children's entertainment. The festival is supported in part by a grant from the Carbon County commissioners and the County Room Tax Fund. n Mahanoy City: The Mahanoy Area school board approved the 2014-15 cafeteria budget of $871,217 on June 26 in a 6-0 vote. Lunch prices will increase by 10 cents and breakfast will remain free to all students, with adults paying $1.75 for breakfast. Lunches will cost $2.20 for elementary students and $2.35 for secondary students. The reduced rate is 40 cents. Adults will pay $3.60. According to the cafeteria fund budget executive summary, the budget includes a 1.92 percent, or $17,039, decrease in expenses due primarily to reduced salary and benefit costs. The full-time secretary position has been replaced with a part-time food service specialist position and one part-time food clerk position has been eliminated through attrition.
n Pottsville: St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church will hold its mid-summer festival from 5 to 9:30 p.m. July 18 and 19 at the parish grounds, Ninth Street and Schuylkill Avenue. The event will include food, games of chance, children's games, a pot luck stand and other activities. All are welcome.
n Shenandoah: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, West Washington Street, will mark its 100th anniversary with a novena to "Our Lady" celebrated daily with 9 a.m. Mass beginning Friday with the novena culminating at the 9 a.m. Mass on July 20 celebrated by Bishop John O. Barres of the Catholic Diocese of Allentown, Monsignor Ronald C. Bocian, pastor, Monsignor Anthony Muntone and several of the church's former pastors, followed by the traditional Procession of Our Lady through the streets of northwestern Shenandoah, led by the Upper Schuylkill Marching Band followed by parishioners and friends carrying traditional cintas - portable float shrines - in her honor. The Italian Festival will be held 5 to 11 p.m. July 18 and 19 and 6 to 9 p.m. July 20, concluding with a fireworks display at 9:30 p.m. July 20 by Zambelli International. The festival will include homemade Italian food including pasta, pizza frita and wedding soup plus baked goods, games of chance for adults and children, bingo, a beer garden and live entertainment featuring Ghost Country on July 18, Toolshed Jack on July 19 and Rick Lorady as Dean Martin on July 20.
