Work has finished on the Schuylkill County Prison roof.
Warden Gene Berdanier said Wednesday at the monthly prison board meeting that the work was completed July 9.
"We are just waiting on the final inspection to be scheduled," Berdanier said.
The roof replacement was one of several county projects funded through the $21 million bond the commissioners issued in October 2012. Budget Renovation and Roofing, Shamokin, was awarded the contract in February. The overall cost for the project was $407,005.06.
It was also reported at the meeting that the average inmate population peaked for the year in June. The population average was 294, which included 236 men and 58 women. It peaked at 306 in June but was back down to 268 on Wednesday.
The suggested capacity at the prison is 240.
Eight offenders were added to the prerelease program in June. There were a total of 41 offenders on the program, saving 935 total jail days at the prison. Three were removed for violations.
About 3,740 alcohol tests were administered, and 124 drug tests were taken by 41 participants.
In other prison news, the prison will have free Bibles available to inmates by request. Berdanier said the Kenneth Copeland Prayer Ministries in Texas agreed to supply the Bibles and other paperback materials to the facility each month.
Walter Hoving Home will have a presentation at the prison on Friday for women inmates. Located in Garrison, New York, the facility provides a faith-based program that focuses on drug and alcohol abuse for women.
"Representatives of the Walter Hoving Home have been coming to our facility for several years with very positive feedback," Berdanier said.
There is one vacant position for corrections officer at the prison following a resignation last week.
