PORT CARBON - A Cumbola woman charged with assaulting her estranged husband while he was holding their child at her 69 Water St. home on May 31 had charges against her held for court during a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge David A. Plachko.

Jessica L. Staples, 34, was arrested by state police Trooper Joseph Cazonie of the Frackville station and charged with felony interference with the custody of children and misdemeanor simple assault. Plachko determined the commonwealth proved a prima facie case and ordered both charges against Staples held for Schuylkill County Court.

Cazonie said William E. Staples reported staying over at the woman's home overnight when the two became involved in an argument over a pending divorce.

William Staples said that when he tried to leave the home with his son, Jessica Staples came toward him with a knife in her hand, prompting him to back away.

Cazonie said William Staples then sat on a couch with his son and, at one point, began to take pictures of the incident when Jessica Staples approached again with the knife in her hand and, this time, lifted it toward him. William Staples fled the home without his son and contacted authorities, Cazonie said.
