traffic safety detail
Pottsville police are taking steps to ensure the safety of drivers in a construction zone at Route 61 and Mauch Chunk Street.
Chief Richard F. Wojciechowsky said Sgt. James Joos, head of the department's Traffic Safety Division, conducted traffic surveys in the area regarding new patterns and no left turns.
The chief said several motorists were contacted and informed of violations they committed at the intersection.
In addition, PennDOT was contacted to install larger warning signs to better inform drivers as to what they can and cannot do at the intersection.
Wojciechowsky said the purpose of the public safety detail and survey was to ensure there was a "safe environment" for those traveling in the area.
Drivers advised
to obey rules
After receiving complaints about drivers ignoring parking rules through the city, Pottsville police are advising motorists that traffic tickets can be issued for various offenses.
Chief Richard F. Wojciechowsky said among the complaints received were about people parking in front of fire hydrants, parking on the wrong side of the road and more.
He some drivers commit the same violations over and over.
The chief said officers are asking drivers to pay attention to and obey the parking rules and regulations in the city.

to hold event
The Pottsville Bureau of Police will be holding an Open Station event from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 5 in conjunction with National Night Out.
Residents taking advantage of the open door night will have the change to meet police Chief Richard F. Wojciechowsky and his management team, speak with patrol shift supervisors, tour the police station and see some of the vehicles and equipment used by officers during the course of their every day duties as well as special circumstance situations.
Among the management officers available that night, in addition to the chief, will be Capt. John R. Morrow, patrol division and special events captain; Capt. Steven Guers, criminal investigations division captain; and, patrol shift supervisors Sgt. James Joos, Sgt. Mark O'Toole and Cpl. Joseph Welsh.

Twp. police plan
trash crackdown
MAHANOY CITY - Mahanoy Township police will start cracking down on people dropping off trash and other illegal items at the recycling area behind the township municipal building along Route 54.
Chief Brandon Alexander said the area has become a haven for people dropping off items that are not designated as recycling.
In addition, Alexander said residents are asked that if they bring items to the site and the respective bins are full to bring the items back at another time and just not leave them on the ground outside of the containers.
The chief said anyone caught illegal dumping will be cited and have to pay a fine and costs in district court.
