Volunteer Connection: Give the gift of the written word: Be a tutor

If you're able to read this column, consider yourself lucky. I don't know what percentage of the world population is illiterate, but the number must be daunting. Being an American doesn't mean you're born with reading skills and immigrating to this country without being able to speak or write in English must be frightening. Far too many are hiding their inability, which has a negative and profound influence on their lives. Imagine not being able to read or write well enough to read the paper, complete a job application or read the labels at the grocery store. Think how often you read throughout the day, at work, at home or for recreation. What comes so easily to you can be challenging for others. There are far too many adults who need their children to read for them. You can help now.

You can give the gift of literacy to an adult learner by volunteering as a tutor. RSVP of Schuylkill County is looking for tutors age 55 and older to improve an adult learner's English skills, help obtain the GED and increase literacy skills. Your assistance will help someone get a better job, gain employment skills and have a better quality of life. Tutors must have a bachelor's degree, be able to speak, read and write in English and devote a minimum of 3 hours a week to tutoring. Tutoring is held at the Lifelong Learning Center at the Schuylkill Mall.

If you'd like to give someone the gift of the written word, call Carol Bowen at 570-622-3103. Apply now so you can complete your training and receive your materials soon to improve the future quality of life to those in need in Schuylkill County.

There will be several blood drives in the next two weeks. Zion Lutheran Church in Frackville will host Aug. 4, Trinity Lutheran Church in Pottsville Aug. 11 and the Ringtown Valley Fire and Rescue Company Aug. 12. Anyone who is in general good health and who weighs at least 110 pounds is encouraged to donate. Your pint of blood can save the lives of us to three people and help others with blood disorders.

The Schuylkill County Fair will be held Monday through Friday at the Fairgrounds in Summit Station. In addition to regular favorites, there will be some new shows, entertainment, activities, performers, demos and competitions. Find out more at www.schuylkillfair.com.
