SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - The Schuylkill Haven Borough Council awarded bids for two projects at its monthly meeting Wednesday.
The council voted to award a wastewater treatment plant effluent emergency pump station outfall project to Mazzuca Enterprises Inc., Pottsville, for $255,830. There were six bidders for the project.
Funding for the project is coming from a more than $1 million grant awarded previously by the state.
Money from the grant was previously spent on the Main Street flood wall to alleviate flood concerns. Work at the wall started last August and consisted of installing concrete matting and other measures to reduce flooding and prevent erosion of the bank. Another part of the project was flood obstruction removal.
The pump station will be built near the current sewage treatment plant in the borough.
A starting date for the project was not provided. Completion would be by the end of the year, Scott Graver, borough manager, said.
The another bid was awarded for the West End Interceptor Project. The project will add additional sewer capacity to the sewer system, Graver said. There were seven bidders for that job.
"This is the third phase of our flood control project," Graver said.
The council awarded the $1,188,800 project to Pact Construction, New Jersey. Funding for the project will come from a capital reserve bond account.
"I'm hoping to start it by the end of next month," Graver said, adding that completion is possible by early next year.
The council also approved the engineering services for Entech Engineering, Pottsville, for the interceptor project.
Graver said the amount is $55,750 for services during construction and $76,500 for construction observation.
In other news, the council awarded the paving of Haven Street to Lehigh Asphalt Paving and Construction for the $76,640 bid. Three companies bid for the job.
Graver did not say how much of Haven Street would be paved.
The Island Commission in the borough donated half of the proceeds from a recent event to the borough recreation department for its fireworks display. A check for $1,717.09 was presented by B.J. Evans, president of the Island Committee.
