n Girardville: Curbside recycling in the borough is set for Tuesday and Wednesday. All recyclables can be placed out either day, according to a press release from the borough hall. Acceptable items include newspapers and cardboard, clear, brown and green glass and metal cans as well as plastics Nos. 1 and 2. Newspapers must be bundled and tied or in brown paper bags and cardboard must be flattened. Glass must be placed in one container and cans in another. Schuylkill County Drop-Off Recycling Program bins are on site permanently near the borough hall. The recycling center is open to any Schuylkill County resident. Recyclables must be placed in the correct sections of the bins and people must remove all glass, cans and plastics from plastic bags before placing the items in the dumpsters. People may not leave items outside the gates if they are locked. Leaving nonrecyclable items at the site is considered littering. If the bins are full, people may not leave recyclables on the ground or on top of the bins. Violators can face fines.
n Pottsville: At a recent meeting, Pottsville Rotary President Clint Delvalle said the board voted to award Elizabeth Schellenberger $500 for her trip to Honduras to work on a water purification project. Schellenberger is a Nativity BVM High School graduate and president of RoterAct at Duquense University. The trip is sponsored by the Rotary district in Pittsburgh. Rotary district Governor Sharon Benner will visit the Pottsville club on July 31. The board will have a special meeting with Benner. The Shelter Box the club sponsored has been deployed to Lebanon to aid refugees from Syria. Rotarian Bill Davidson said the Salvation Army Board of Directors is planning to install a bench ouside its offices in memory of Captain Adam Hench. Rotary district baseball night is set for Aug. 20 in Williamsport. Tickets are $23 and include a dinner buffet.
n Shenandoah: Greater Shenandoah Area Chamber of Commerce President Marie Popoff and Jacqueline Webb recently set Sept. 21 as the date for a greater Shenandoah townwide yard sale, a topic that had been discussed at previous chamber meetings. The sale will be held in the lot adjacent to the Shenandoah Senior Community Living Center, East Washington Street. The cost for a table, provided by the renter, is $5. Proceeds will go to the chamber's Christmas lighting fund. All residents of the greater Shenandoah area are invited to participate. In the chamber meeting minutes, Secretary Betty Ann Bugden noted Popoff has been asked to sit on the executive board of the Schuylkill Chamber.
n Summit Station: The Beatles cover band The Return will be featured on the M&T Stage at 7 and 9 p.m. Thursday at the 30th annual Schuylkill County Fair. The Return, according to a fair press release, "sounds and looks just like the Beatles" and "strives to maintain the utmost level of authenticity in their show." The band started in 1995 when four friends got together to play their favorite Beatles songs, according to the release. This led to The Return's formation and desire to "recreate the early '60s Beatles concert experience down to the tiniest detail." Other information about the fair, which runs July 29 through Aug. 3, is available online at www.schuylkill.com. On the main stage at 7 and 9 p.m. Friday will be The Ante-Up Tour with country music stars Steve Holy and Jason Michael Carroll. In a release, fair officials said Schaeffer's Harley-Davidson, Orwigsburg, was instrumental in helping to bring Ante-Up to the 2013 fair. Fair-goers in the mood for line dancing will be able to do it at 7:30 p.m. in the Ag Arena show ring to the sounds of disc jockey Chicken Nugget, sponsored by the Schuylkill County 4-H Program, according to the release. Barry Long will be on hand at 6 p.m. to offer lessons to those unsure of the dance moves. On the fair's final day, Saturday, Elvis impersonator Shawn Klush will take the M&T Stage with performances at 7 and 9 p.m. Klush, according to fair release, "has emerged as the world's top professional Elvis tribute artist." His performance is sponsored by Kreitzer Sanitation.
