n Orwigsburg: Put People First! PA, an organization made up of people across the state who are struggling with basic needs such as health care, housing, jobs or education, will hold its first membership assembly Saturday at Schuylkill Lodge, 1000 E. Market St. In a press release, Mitch Troutman, a member of the group, said it has 45 members in seven counties, including the organizing committee in Schuylkill. Troutman said the group will vote on and announce its first grass-roots political campaign and "we're giving the leadership award to Schuylkill Haven resident Anne Marie Reager." He said the public is invited to attend the group's closing ceremony at 4:30 p.m. when the awards will be given. n Pottsville: Senior community centers in Schuylkill County are taking orders for sticky buns, with proceeds benefiting the centers' programs and activities. Ordered sticky buns will be made by the Plain and Fancy Donut Shop, Schuylkill Haven. Plain sticky buns are $5.50. For those topped with walnuts, raisins, or coconut, the price is $6. Orders will be taken through Oct. 11 and payment is due at the time of order. The sticky buns will be available at the senior community centers the morning of Oct. 22. Orders may be placed at any of the centers or by calling 570-624-3017. The following senior community centers are participating: Pottsville. 201 N. n Shenandoah: The Greater Shenandoah Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its first community yard sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Shenandoah Senior Living Community parking lot, 101 E. Washington St. There will be entertainment and food will be available. The sale will benefit the chamber's Christmas lighting fund.
n Tamaqua: Sixty-eight members attended the recent annual picnic sponsored by the Tamaqua Senior Citizens. Christy Joy catered the event and members supplied desserts. President Jean Machamer provided surprises. The seniors meet at 1 p.m. every Thursday at the Masonic Lodge, Route 54, Hometown, which is accessible to the handicapped. People 55 and older are welcome to join the group.
n Tamaqua: The Tamaqua Salvation Army's Older and Bolder group kicked off its fall season with an informational and registration session at 105 W. Broad St. September activities include a health rhythms drum circle with Moe Jerrant on Wednesday and a bell performance at the annual Salvation Army dinner meeting Sept. 27. The group's regular sessions are held from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesdays.
n Tamaqua: Zion Lutheran Church will sponsor a Taste of the Season food event from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. It will feature homemade bleenies, bean soup, chicken rice, barbecue, pierogies and salads as well as baked goods such as apple dumplings, apple tarts and apple fritters. There will also be tricky trays. Everyone is welcome.
