Inmate faces

drug charges

MAHANOY CITY - State police at Frackville charged Charles Alexander, 36, an inmate of SCI/Mahanoy, with possession of contraband.

Police said that at 2:45 p.m. May 3, Alexander was found with unidentified tablets, which were recovered by the SCI/Mahanoy security office and turned over to state police.

The tablets were sent to a lab in Bethlehem for identification and testing, which indicated the labets were a "Schedule III Controlled Substance," police said.

A charge of contraband was filed against Alexander in the office of Magisterial District Judge Anthony J. Kilker, Shenandoah.

NEW RINGGOLD - A 72-year-old Drums man suffered minor injuries in a one-vehicle crash at 12:01 p.m. Wednesday on Summer Valley Road in East Brunswick Township.

State police at Frackville said the crash occurred as George Hinton was driving a 2005 Subaru Baja eastbound on Route 895.

Hinton looked away from the road as he sneezed and his vehicle veered to the right, hitting the end of a guide rail, police said.

The vehicle then became partially airborne, spinning clockwise on its front bumper, and the rear of the vehicle came down and hit the guide rail.

It then rolled onto its left side, slid east, came back onto its wheels and stopped facing north across the eastbound lane, police said.

Hinton was wearing a seat belt and suffered cuts on his right arm. Police said he was treated at the scene by EMS and refused further medical care.

The vehicle was severely damaged and towed, police said. New Ringgold Fire Company assiste at the scene.

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN - Penn State Schuylkill police charged Perry T. Mullings, Yonkers, N.Y., with possession of a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia from an incident at 11:18 a.m. Sept. 10 at 105 University Drive.

No further information was available from university police.

City man not hurt

in Rt. 209 crash

NEW PHILADELPHIA - A 38-year-old Pottsville man escaped injury in a one-vehicle crash at 12:31 a.m. Wednesday on Route 209.

State police at Frackville said the crash occurred as Karl Snody was driving a 1995 Ford F-150 south on Route 209 in New Philadelphia.

Snody fell asleep while going around a right curve in the road, and his vehicle exited the east berm and struck a utility pole head-on, shearing the pole. Police said the vehicle came to rest at the point of impact, facing southeast.

Snody will be cited for failing to drive within a single lane, police said.

He was not injured but his vehicle sustained disabling front-end damage, police said.

Assisting at the scene were the New Philadelphia, Blythe and Kaska fire departments.
