North Schuylkill

The following were named students of the month for October in the North Schuyl-kill School District:

Jeffrey Markosky, grade 3; Aidan Engleman, grade 4; Reginald Crawford, grade 7; and Eliza Schally, grade 11.

Shen Rotary

Jillian Dove, a Shenandoah Valley High School senior, was named student of the month for October by the Shenandoah Rotary Club.

Jillian is National Honor Society vice president, student council vice president, class vice president and a morning announcer. She was named homecoming queen and was the school's Hugh O'Bri-an Youth Leadership ambassador and scholarship recipient.

Jillian is involved with the Academic Bowl Team, Youth Conference, float committee and talent search. Throughout high school, she has participated in many student council and Learn 'n Serve Projects, such as painting the student mural, Toys for Tots and bingo at Shenandoah Senior Living Community. She is also on the cross country, basketball and track team. She volunteers as a water girl for the Shenandoah Valley Blue Devils football team.

She is a Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce Youth Summit member, participant in the Anti-Defamation League "No Place for Hate" and Halloween window painting. She helped Shenandoah Valley's Toys for Tots fundraiser, volunteered time at the school's open house and helped plan and coordinate the Inclusive Spirit Week at Shenandoah Valley.

She has participated in the Olweus Anti-Bullying Program, anti-racism events and helped plan and coordinate the "Peace Pole" and "Don't Label Me Day" at Shenandoah Valley. She also helped plan and participate in the Stand Against Racism Day.

Jillian has been active in class fundraisers, Vera Bradley bingos, Quarter Jams and volunteered to sell tickets for sporting events for co-athletic director John Brennan. She is involved in Downtown Shenandoah Inc.'s Dickens Christmas program, will canvass the town for donations and sold "rally towels" to benefit DSI's Christmas program and was also involved in Shenandoah's Heritage Day.

Jillian has participated in the Shenandoah Valley Ethnic Fair. A daughter of John and Andrea Dove, Shenandoah, she plans to attend college and major in forensic science or criminology.

Mahanoy Area

Students at Mahanoy Area Middle School and High School were named students of the month for September.

Sponsored by the Mahanoy City Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 695, program nominees are judged on the basis of multiple achievements, character, leadership, citizenship and scholastic aptitude.

Middle school Principal Michael Heater announced Megan Bisco and Brendan Bennett as the honorees.

Megan is a daughter of Scott and Susan Bisco, Barnesville, and a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Barnesville, where she is an acolyte. She is the eighth-grade class president, student council treasurer, seventh- and eighth-grade girls basketball captain and a distinguished honor student.

She is involved in the chorus, National Junior Honor Society, Red Cross Club, intramural basketball, Theatre Arts and Mahanoy City Girls Softball League. She also volunteers at the SPCA.

Megan plans to attend college in the future.

Brendan is a son of James and Stacy Bennett, Quakake. He is involved in the chorus, National Junior Honor Society, Theatre Arts, seventh- and eighth-grade football, intramural basketball, track and field and wrestling.

A distinguished honor student, Brendan volunteers at the Tamaqua Community Arts Center. His future plans are to attend college.

High school Principal Thomas Smith said Kelsey Macieunas and Tyler Cavenas are the honorees.

Kelsey is a daughter of Joseph and Kelly Macieunas, Barnesville. Her school and extracurricular activities include National Honor Society, student council, Areascope (yearbook), Chordaires, Rotary Interact Club and Nutrition Advisory Council. She is cheerleading captain, choir treasurer and Theatre Arts Club secretary.

Kelsey lettered in swimming her freshman and sophomore years and in track and field her sophomore and junior years. She was a homecoming court member and Greater Pottsville Winter Carnival participant.

In the community, she is a member of ACTION Youth Group, St. Richard of Chichester Roman Catholic Church greeter and lector, Meals on Wheels volunteer during school and summer and a Biddy Basketball tournament volunteer.

Kelsey plans to attend St. Joseph or Villanova universities to major in biology.

Tyler is a son of Terry and Melissa Cavenas, Mahanoy City. His school and extracurricular activities include National Honor Society, student council, Schuylkill County Youth Leadership Conference, Bear Pride Program and Chordaires. He is choir vice president, a DAR Award recipient, Rotary Interact Club president, Theatre Arts Club vice president and captain of the basketball, football and track and field teams.

Tyler is a member of ACTION Youth Group, an altar server at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Roman Catholic Church, a Meals on Wheels volunteer during school and summer, Biddy Basketball volunteer and involved with the Senator Rhoades Track Meet, girls and boys basketball tournament and wrestling tournament.

Tyler's plans to attend the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., or Lehigh University, Bethlehem.
