MAHANOY CITY - The Mahanoy Area Board of Education welcomed three new directors during Thursday's reorganization meeting.
New members Steven Gnall, Karen E. Yedsena and Jay Hanley, and incumbent Mary Agnes DiCasimirro were sworn in by board member Michael Mistishen, who was appointed the temporary chairperson in the reorganization process.
After the swearing in ceremony, Mistishen asked for nominations for board president. Thomas Bashinsky, who has served as president in 2013, was the only nomination and was elected 9-0.
David Kurzinsky was the only nomination for vice president and was elected unanimously.
The following appointments were made by Bashinsky:
- Pennsylvania School Board Association liaison - John Erbe
- Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29 representative - Jay Hanley
- Mahanoy City Public Library board member - Michael Mistishen
The board also voted to retain the law firm of Elliott Greenleaf & Dean as solicitor for five years.
The regular monthly meeting was held after reorganizing with a very brief agenda. The following actions were taken by the board:
- Accepted the resignation of Sara Behler as high school volleyball coach, effective Nov. 22.
- Accepted the resignation of Kyle Schaeffer as head freshmen boys basketball coach, effective Nov. 25, and his appointment as volunteer boys' basketball coach.
- Appointed Darren Kline as head freshmen boys' basketball coach at a salary of $3,567.21
The next regular monthly meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 23, in the high school's Large Group Instruction room.
